Here in USA corporate world it’s very clear that a significant fraction of those into this are “woke washing” over their other bad behavior. Here is the recipe: (1) Stab your employees in the back with one hand to save 100M then (2) don

Very interesting, cause that’s a reasonable explanation for that alternative norm. Ultimately, if we’re gonna ask what norms are good we should have some cost function we are trying to optimize and ask for norms that encourage it to go up.

This is what they did at times in ancient Athens. One positive was that the average citizen was much more aware of the concerns of the city than would occur if only a select few were running things.

Problem with these systems is that you can’t study their equilibrium with simulations. That’s cause their equilibrium time scale gets longer and longer as you lower temp and it becomes too expensive to simulate long enough to get there. S

If that’s the point then it seems we are making the right decisions. Dominance in one at the cost of another, possibly less important area.

Definitely interesting to consider how single events have shaped history. Another is the destruction of the library at Alexandria, which was supposedly done by accident, against orders. Had that not been destroyed would we be substantiall

You’ve only emphasized one side of the interval, which suggests some bias. Eg you haven’t written out that the other side implies you might have a smaller chance of these issues once you get covid. That said, it probably is reasonable to

My hot take: early science classes are almost completely useless, infotainment-type courses. Much better to engage the interested young with math. Then they can get into real science courses when in highschool.

That sounds more like “avoidance of personal engagement in intellectual pursuit” rather than anti-intellectual - if anything these suggest complete deference to supposed experts.

Wonder about the relation to prisoners dilemma. Maybe that’s a simple example: offering prisoners opportunity to rat out the other can gives a worse outcome than forcing collaboration.
