I think this is a good challenge. But also nobody here really proves or argued that millennials are uniquely nihilistic either.

I see this as a confusing explanation of the algorithm for calculating coefficients, not as a line that explains what the Fourier transform is. As for a single line on intuition, can you beat: “method of decomposing a function into a sun of

You point out that it’s hard to measure merit at times. OK, but you haven’t argued that means our noisy signals of merit should be ignored. Whatever it’s flaws, here is what I like about meritocracy: it says we should honor and reward tho

The argument here is that society holds the humanities in contempt because their students aren't held to any meaningful standards --> aren't taught to do anything useful. I think that is dated, but was the sense ~10 years ago.

To be clear: I think these policies favoring certain groups and those requiring academics to swear fidelity to these preferences is entirely immoral. The people doing this are wrong and society should course correct.

That’s true. Another reality is that there are bad actors on the customer side too. A single person who gets off on being awful to people can leave an unwarranted bad review and materially harm an Airbnb host’s business.

Definitely agree, but want to highlight one good reason to work hard for young’ns: If you can make a good impression with your colleagues they may be able to help you land a good job down the road.

It’s definitely annoying but I wonder if it’s also not entirely bad: We have a built in debate system for any issue that catches people’s attention.

Historians sometimes also argue that the constant wars between France and Britain played a role in the industrial revolution occurring there. Among other things, to finance the war Britain had to borrow money, and to get it they had to sig

Computation is not theory. Theorists use paper and pencil and sometimes mathematica, not simulation. As for not being able to rebuild a computer, that’s truly ridiculous.

Thanks for the link. Yeah the world is complicated. I assume the plots above are driven by globalization. Fwiw I’m pro reshoring and isolationist. Below is a link to single motherhood rates by year. The lift off precedes the drug war so

Plenty of people on the right do not support walker et al. The right isn’t any more of a monolith than the left. Absolutely they’d support tax incentives for married couples. As for stronger social safety nets decreasing crime, sounds good

The drug war argument is compelling. If this is the main driver we have a pretty unpleasant trade off to consider: accept drug addiction which ruins lives or send people to jail which also ruins lives. Some drugs aren’t so bad so the tra

Great point. In other words, we are experiencing the usual failure mode to liberalism: it can be taken advantage of by non liberal actors. Not sure what the restoring force is to prevent this.
