I don’t really understand the logic behind native only, beyond the desire not to introduce a plant or creature that would monopolize their environment.

I agree. Also it’s worth noting that there are multiple, reasonable definitions of “fair” and separately following these will not result in equivalent outcomes. So no matter what is done, there will be room for criticism.

A way to see the scaling this commenter quoted: Suppose there are on average N items left to be seen at time t. Then using a continuous time approximation: dN/dt = -N / N_tot This gives -dN / N = dt / N_tot Integrate fr

Interesting idea, but isn’t there variance in the output? Eg I’ve seen people ask it to “write in the style of x” etc and different people also clearly have different writing styles.

Maybe you’re thinking about throwing out exponential growth in differential equations, where only decay makes sense physically. Eg in quantum well analysis this is done cause the former would give a wave that is not normalizeable.

Very interesting. I wonder if something analogous to this could be behind wave function collapse in quantum mechanics.

What I meant was that if you write sqrt(a) x = y you get an integral in y (that does not depend on a) times 1/sqrt(a). It doesn’t require anything except knowing how to change variables in an integral, you don’t have to actually be abl

Dimensional analysis is great. As for this example, it also follows by a simple change of variables.

But is housing in SF a fundamental need? I think the question posed is quite relevant, and FWIW my take is that property rights are a concern here. The answer is that there are other concerns in tension with this — including the desire to

I can’t understand how this is used. Eg his expression for r_t in the inverse at the start. How would you use this in a program to get the inverse? Guess just pointing out that you can iteratively find one coefficient at a time. Also the

Did some googling and just found a bunch of assertions for where the visual center is in an image. Sounds like it’s “where people perceive” the center to be and that’s about as good a def as is possible.

I don’t follow everything he figured out / discussed here. But the man is definitely a genius, and through Mathematica alone has had an immense impact on science. Appreciate the link, it was refreshing to read a bit of his life.

I personally don’t have a great handle on how to reason about anticipated maintenance costs for a given project, yet would like to. Some simple notions: core libraries should be written with few dependencies so as to reduce update impetus

Yeah but presumably averaging over many people or situations in a study like this would reduce that noise.

I would think if you have a high title the company would have high expectations to go along with it. If this person hadn’t done anything useful in a while, very reasonable to let them go.

I agree. The fun thing for me in “debate” is understanding the arguments for and against something. Most often, arguments differ through either (1) the axioms used, or (2) there is a subjective preference at play. In these cases, there i

Thanks for the counterpoint. I have no clue what’s going on there in reality. Edit: but I would say that financial cost is not the only concern here.

If there are counter examples, but they’re hard to find, this is still pretty interesting — it might meant we could say “most instances of an NP class of problem can be solved in P”.

I think it’s means “there are coders out there who are consistently 10x more impactful than the average coder,” and this could be the result of simply speed or through other methods — finding better solutions etc.

Agree. One comment though: a 30 year gap between uk and USA outlawing slavery doesn’t seem very significant on the 200k year timescale of human existence.

Looking forward to the (very productive) tinkering phase of neural networks transitioning to a synthesis period, where we understand better the essential ingredients and why they’re essential.
