Newbie here trying to follow. The prior post I link below suggests that what’s going on here is we are trying to find good points to sample an image. A challenge here is that the algorithms to generate the blue noise distributed sample poi

I found the discussion around ambiguity and required group consolidation around a shared understanding pretty interesting. One could imagine that the amount of ambiguity present in a problem could then set the scale of how many people shou

There is a lot of encouragement of guilt in the USA today. In general, shouldn’t we embrace a value system that encourages good behavior? Eg honor those who do relatively well in life, given the circumstances they are born into? The immed

This was fun and simpler than I was anticipating: After first reading the problem statement I assumed we’d need to do some sort of search to get the connected clusters, but we see here the line to draw at any point is determined completely

Interesting points I’ve read recently in this area: A national test creates cohesion in a society in that it defines what knowledge is valued and aligns people around it. Will we lose this benefit if the test is dropped? The tests and othe

That’s a great, practical point. One anecdote about smart kids though: i knew a number of very smart boys growing up who got bored at school and checked out for that reason, and life didn’t work out great for them - nor did society benefi

It seems that the priority view may feel intuitive because humans fail to internalize that the diminishing returns are already baked into utility gained from some benefit and they are trying to insert it a second time.

Would like to “fix” the issue with the first few numbers after 10. They make it much harder to teach a young child the concept of base ten counting. Would be much easier if we would replace “ten” by “teny” then “eleven” -> “teny-one” e

The two phases of super cooled water dispute seems to have been due to a coding error. https://physicstoday.scitation.org/do/10.1063/PT.6.1.2018082...

I think your factor of five is on the “wrong side” of the equation here you’re thinking of. Ie if the crime rate were 5 x that of other cities AND the incarceration rate were 5 x lower, that would mean criminals were 25 x less likely to be

It seems the appropriate method to judge this approach is in comparison to the baseline referenced at the start: humans making “black box” judgement calls that are subject to the individual judge’s biases. If the computer programmed decisi

Unfortunately biophysics has turned out to be a field that largely does not interest either physicists or biologists. They’ve found some interesting results but this sub fields hey day is probably behind it.
