Interesting scaling as diffusion in a uniform space goes like x^2 ~ t, or t~x^1/2. So I’d expect the time to equilibrate to go like a length to the 1/2. Maybe that works out if the length is some power of n in this case? Or may

Personally find the premise of the article odd. I don’t dislike public transit cause I’m worried I’ll die taking it. I am worried I’ll be mugged, and I know it will be unpleasantly crowded and take a long time. As for why we find the cras

Recently read some nice articles on the companion matrix. One cool One: how to find the polynomial whose eigenvalues are the squares of those of some given polynomial p? Ans: get the companion matrix for p, square it, and then get the c

In some models, this picture of slow gain followed by rapid decline is actually the worst possible situation for happiness, with the inverse (rapid gain followed by slow declines giving optimal happiness). See here: https://www.

I don’t like this essay. Agree with the author that current state is not great don’t agree with her suggestion of not trying to do good in the world and just enjoy yourself.

I’m not sure I understand the spring example shown. It’s definitely underdetermined as one solution is to have the middle string at tension 0 in which case there is no difference between what’s shown and what we get when this string is cut

Another voice here not happy about this. It’s as if the advocates here have no interest in learning anything from the history of science as a practice of argument by evidence. Banning arguments doesn’t convince anyone paying attention tha

One problem with all these reviews is that we can’t see the counter factual. That said I agree Iraq war was likely a very bad thing for our country and certainly is responsible for much of our internal strife right now.

I agree with you: fundamentally a bad thing happened. Mitigating the harm may have been possible to some degree but perhaps a more significant degree of freedom was simply choosing which form the negative consequences would take: more dea

An aspect of affirmative actions policies in practice is that the individual beneficiaries are not explicitly labeled as such, so there is a layer of plausible deniability.

There are so many double standards applied today that it’s hard to know what the author has in mind. Can accept the idea that vague rules are subject to abuse though.
