I think there is definitely a communicative advantage to the 'lingua franca' concept as it applies to programming languages. Think of programs as the semi-English (English is actually the true lingua franca of programming :)) representation

This article is about HTTP server programming, but node.js implements a number of features that are just good for general-purpose programming of all kinds: a good system for including modules, a decent I/O interface, robust events. I'm not

I think I've read a couple of perspectives on why JS would be the "NBL", and I wasn't trying to claim I was the first to come to that conclusion. I'm saying that I think that this is JavaScript's first implementation in the wild that I've l

To me, the important part of node.js is that it's using the V8 ( http://code.google.com/p/v8/ ) JavaScript engine which Google has a strong, vested interest in being the fastest dynamic platform around and a lot of really smart programmers

I'm excited about it. I've been attempting to blog, and using node.js as my subject matter. (Don't want to link-pimp as I need to enhance/edit, but you can check my profile if you're interested). It's my opinion that JS is the new lingua fr

I get 12 vacation and 5 sick days/year, plus a few (maybe 9) holidays off. I think I'm probably at about the median of vacation days for a standard American professional (maybe on the low end for the software industry). I like the month pla

In high school, I thought that the CodeWarrior IDE (which was, as far as I knew, the dominant development environment) was absolutely terrible. I'm not sure how good my judgment at that time was. That said, with OS X they really became a lo

Maybe it won't compile, but: /spoj/c_run: line 5: 3844 Segmentation fault ./prog is the error I got, and that doesn't look like a compile error. (Also, just to be pedantic, I had noted the stack overflow possibility in my origi

I'm getting an infinite (>5m wait time) "waiting for compilation" message with the above code. Are you trying to traverse function calls before compilation? You'll eventually run into the halting problem ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H

I think this is barfing on a lack of punctuation. "this is the most shittest game online ever full of little nooby kids" (taken from a youtube comment) is "not likely stupid". Add a period at the end, though, and it works. Maybe the parsin

I'd like to add that for web-related Ruby stuff, OS X is definitely the first class platform, with Linux/other Unixes coming in second. TextMate is considered the canonical rails editor for a reason.
