Relying on a safety critical assumption to be true without checking it isn’t a good idea even if it’s probably true.

A brief initial exponential phase that doesn’t explain the average state of the system is a poor mental model. Epidemiologists do frequently use exponential growth in discussions of theoretical spreading, but they are not correct. It does

No, because without clear and extensive testing protocols you create opportunities for bad actors to release dangerous or ineffective drugs. Or even good actors to do so unintentionally. The medicine is not yet sufficiently shown to be safe

It’s not “banned” it’s just not approved yet. The US is making plans to buy tons of it in advance. Banned has a very specific connotation that is wildly out of place.

I don’t really care if you say sigmoid when you mean exponential, my point is that both of those are wrong. People shudder in fear of the phrase “exponential” but disease does not spread exponentially. It never does. That’s a laymen fairy t

I can name a great number of problems obviously, but at the end of the day, most of these challenges are bypassed with frequent supply drops that include massive steel edifices. Oxygen? Send a fuck ton of the candles they burn on nuclear su

I took it to mean you’re claiming growth is exponential or nearly exponential until it nears 100% like a sigmoid function. But that’s wrong. Growth stalls out much much earlier. It’s just not right to call disease spread exponential.

By exponential, you mean there’s a steep part but you don’t really know the difference between exponential and logarithmic. The rapid slowdown of infections is FAR below 100% of people.

No it’s not. Contagion spread is logarithmic, and has obvious upper bounds. E.g. about a third of the us has gotten Covid. 5x contagious does not give you 166% of the population infected. Nor does it give you 100%. Probably not even 90%. I

Pretty much every estimate of exponential growth has turned out to be logarithmic. Which makes sense. That’s how % of new nodes reached in a random walk through a graph works.

I don’t think it’s popular in the west though? It went through (still in?) an unusual phase where the target audience shifted to women and the protagonists became vaguely gay effeminate young men iirc

That seems like an easily solveable problem? I don’t think thousands of times harder rings true, conditioned on having accessible shipments of new goods. On a slow but regular scale. A colony wouldn’t even need to be self sufficient. Just p

Author’s reasoning seems far fetched. I would believe that SpaceX will go to mars in the next 5 years. But to think that building a city on mars is a simple next step seems silly

I find this funny because now it’s pretty much just NGE, a deconstruction, and Gurren Lagaan (sp?) that have maintained significant cultural appeal in western audiences imo. As anime has gotten more mainstream, the original mecha shows have

Gift giving on Christmas is derived from the wise men bringing gifts to the birth of jesus, and likely to earlier pagan rituals that predate Christmas. It is extremely unlikely that Christmas reverts to a banal religious thing. People like

It’s not really a faux pas but it’s not very thoughtful. Receiving a small amount of money is also irrelevant to most middle class and above people.

This is merely the seaborn “darkgrid” style option. You need to set it explicitly if you want this effect.
