Yeah, and growing up in a foster home on an Indian reservation beats crippled mechanic dad (by the way when my family came to the US, going to McD for birthday was a big deal - the dentist dad was purely hypothetical :). I'm sure there

Sure - I wasn't taking it up with you, just voicing my thoughts :) On the topic at hand - again, while it's a matter of personal choice - I think that growing up in a two parent household with caring parents who provide for their

Thank you, got it. In that case I just think it's a wrong choice of words. My understanding is that privilege is that few are born with (see this humorous commercial from the UK about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch

I much more sympathize with UPS workers who got Christmas day off than some shmuck who ordered his package late. Better plan next year. There is a saying I like 'failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine

I see a marked increase in the use of the word 'privilege' and how it 'should be checked' - usually in reference to not being black/hispanic, female or gay. What exactly do you mean? Is it same as 'count your b

How would this help Italian government? All income would flow up to the US and get eventually taxed there.

No, it's not possible. To lead a country one has to be elected - hence his public position must reflect core beliefs of the majority of the electorate.

Articles like these make me wish that HN had a black-list of sites that only publish partisan politicized crap journalism (regardless of actual brand of ideology preached). If they make a conscious decision to push one-way propaganda, they

I have a simpler explanation - women (and billions of other people who are not involved in open source programming - including myself) have better use of their time than write code for free. I actuall think that explaining any group not do

You know, saying 'I recommend reading up on X from an academic perspective' is a fairly useless cliche. If you want to be helpful and feel that there is a specific book or study that someone should read - go ahead and mention that

Let's look at the numbers: 99% of open source developers are men ( http://people.cs.umass.edu/~wallach/talks/2011-04-05_JHU.pdf ). It appears that women just seem to have better use of their time than writing c

Judging from the OP, he's right and you're living in lala-land. Ie - it could be a case of major conspiracy on the part of publishers (who are all women btw) to keep their readers away from tech. Or they could simply be giving th

Right - but there is one piece that I think you're mislabeling. Most of the stuff I mentioned is done by US govt against actors that are external and are considered a threat. We can leave aside the argument whether it's correct in

I am unhappy with the whole premise of labeling people as white. What do a Polish immigrant laborer, a Jewish professor and a WASP homemaker have in common - oh, they're not black. Let's lump them all together!

Professional basketball player is an occupation. It's concentration of a specific group of people shows that it's exactly not a lottery. You're downvoting it because it doesn't appear to agree with your worldview.

Fine - so let's make obtaining an 'airbnb license' as easy as the driver one. Then if host has issues - take it away. But somehow I imagine that red tape required to obtain a hotel license is significantly longer, benefiting

I really wish articles like these would spend more time on how the poor immigrant went from 0 to first 10 million, then from 10m to 1bio (of course I realize the author only has what his subject would tell him - so it's only a wish). H

Ok, so the issue is not really licensing, if we get honest. Instead you don't want your next door neighbor to rent out his apartment on a full-time basis and see requirement to obtain a license as a measure that would prevent that fr

To me the issue is scale. Just like people can hold garage sales or lemonade stand w/o a license vs running a bar. By same token - I don't mind someone renting out AN apartment. If the issue is tax - Airbnb can simply collect it o
