Per-capita light use does increase. In order for Jevon's paradox to apply, per capita energy use would have to increase more than the decrease from improved efficiency. So if LEDs are ten times more efficient, per capita light use woul

The authors of that paper are estimating that energy use for lighting will eventually reach past levels because of the rebound effect and population growth, not Jevon's paradox. Jevon's paradox occurs when an increase in efficienc

It depends on what those calories are. If you're eating inexpensive veggies/fruits/starches/grains, you're probably around 200-300mpg equivalent on a bike. If you're eating steaks, then you're probably pre

I believe a big reason inflation didn't take off last time was that the Fed kept rates low until we were solidly in a bubble, and only raised rates a year or two prior to the asset bubble bursting. I wouldn't be surprised if the ~

It is illegal as far as I know, and I've never heard of Tesla remotely disabling a car unless it's been stolen. The only thing I've read about is them not doing in-warranty repairs and/or recalls on salvage vehicles, but

So layoffs in Fremont and Roseville are somehow causing Tesla employees at the Gigafactory to become less experienced? https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/10/13/4819750/ Yeah... OK.

The problem with air travel is throughput. There are 6+ million trips between SF and LA per year, and any significant increase either replaces other flights or requires another two airports in SF/LA, which ain't cheap. http:/

I'd love to see something that included the lifespan of food too, ideally in terms of when it tastes good, tastes passable, doesn't taste the best but is usable, and needs to be tossed.

I think Damore's case is also relatively weak, mostly because of his writings/post, which I'm guessing Google will claim was poorly and/or insufficiently thought out/supported/reasoned, and suggested that Damor

The systems part is fine, but if I'm remembering this correctly, they assumed we could arbitrarily convert resources into other resources, which led to some wacky outcomes.

I'm not sure if that's the base Leaf because Nissan doesn't appear to have pricing on their website, but they definitely tested a loaded Bolt. The base Bolt starts at $36,620 according to a quick search and the one MT tested

I've built ABS (archlinux) packages by having some swap space on my pogoplug mobile's boot drive (1TB USB). It's a slog, but stuff will finish sooner or later, and by that I mean later or really late. Now that I'm thinki

You can probably shave off another .2W by disabling the HDMI and LEDs, but an RPi3 at load will probably be at 4+W from the wall. At the same time, you're comparing the power consumption of lets say 10 whole RPis/platforms to the

$13.6 trillion is a ton of debt (literally?). At the same time, I think debt versus net worth is a more descriptive metric. Back in 2008, household net worth (HNW) was about $56 trillion, so household debt was about a quarter of HNW. With H

My guess is that the increases in college costs are coming from for-profit universities and other "value" adds (student housing, etc...). Inflation adjusted tuition costs in the UC system have apparently dropped by 40% or so since
