I've had such problems with the official AWS redshift JDBC driver -- Mostly around memory usage compared to the PG8.4 driver that also works. But also, - Much slower to cancel queries - Still reading and buffering most of the result af

I'm glad Process-One and ejabberd are still doing well. This brings back memories for me! My first job out of school was building video conferencing back in 2008. We used ejabbered for presence and messaging, had full federation and e

I use mermaid now because it's embedded into markdown on gitlab. Also powerpoint equivalents -- For more control over format and presentation.

I have strong opinions about some things. The best advice I ever got was to 'Stop re-litigating the past'. This came after some contentious discussion with my product counterparts. (I'm a software engineer, but have thoughts

So get a cashier's check from the bank. Forge a second copy. Now any caller to the bank will get an okay. On deposit, bank, with better abilities to detect fraudulent paper will determine one of the two is not real. That doesn't

I was a SWE at google for a few years around 2013. I totally recommend the experience to anyone. I left to join a small startup founded by friends, another experience I'd recommend to anyone. In particular, I learned a ton. My prior jo

I just watched a GDC talk on game tutorials [1]. He says much the same, but has some good ways to fix it in a game world. I think it's much harder to have the environmental queues in an app, but I'd be curious what it'd look

For me, the key to async/await is a linter that complains about un-handled promises. I appreciate in Go that any green threads are created explicitly with `go`, whereas in typescript, they are signaled by the return type. My most recen

You can get yubikey and use their software. It was great until I lost my keys with the yubikey attached. Can even write a script to read a code and put it in your clipboard. That said, I'm back to using my phone now.

All the comments on the chronicle article are surprisingly negative toward them. I've been a huge fan of parklets -- they make the city feel much more vibrant and alive.

We have an unofficial motto of 'unlimited questions remaining'. This came initially from supporting our customers via live chat (SQL charting tool, so live help with SQL, analysis, etc) and that percolated throughout the company,

If you are in AWS, you can use S3 for data storage and DynamoDB for HA. Our first install was set up using their 'best practices' and consul, being stateful, is frustrating to run in kubernetes. We migrated to using S3/Dynam

Tripwire is a linux util for doing just that. However you need some read-only media to store the hashes and I think rootkits can still just intercept the read calls. http://linux.die.net/man/8/tripwire
