I like this response. I think that one of the best things about a take-home challenge is that during the interview, you can then say, "The way you implemented this function was interesting. Let's talk about why you did it that way

This is a great point. Again, we're getting a weird look at things because we're posting on Hacker News, not Defense Contractor News or Accountant News. Software companies are definitely a significant group, but there are lots of

I think that we get a really skewed view of things because we're on Hacker News, a site that focuses much more on startups. If we were on Factory Manager News or Corporate Retail News, there would be much, much less talk about firing.

Yep. I remember growing up with one of those older playgrounds - there was a platform about 6 feet off the ground that had a rope climb on one side of it. The idea was to get a kid to climb up the wall with the rope. Six-year-old me was fas

Just to provide a counterpoint, I had a master sergeant who would flip the fuck out if he saw obvious problems. The idea was that if he could find obvious problems, then his juniors don't give a fuck at all, and there are going to be a

Matt Parker and Trey Stone, the creators of South Park, did the exact same thing when making Bigger, Longer, and Uncut . Put completely ridiculous over-the-top NC-17 stuff in there, get it rejected for those parts, and keep the iffy stuff.

Nope, and you'll see this everywhere that you see the intersection of pop culture and the advice to "be yourself." This isn't a dig at Nimoy's advice - it's damn good advice . But it doesn't sell compared

Unfortunately, the vast distances required make public transport limited in effectiveness in the US. They're great in the cities, but the very low population density outside of the cities means that it's not going to do very well

Rent control will lead to more slums and more boats like this. American cities have tried rent control, and it simply leads to a shortage of rooms for rent. After all - why would you build apartments or rent out existing rooms if you'r

One thing that I've become a firm believer in is that teaching isn't the problem; administration is. A good administrator or group of administrators will make the entire school into a team that can excel. They set a clear vision
