In case anyone is interested, I ended up going with Helpscout: I find it to have the easiest/simplest interface. I also looked at Front, Intercom, and Zoho.

Yeah, this is probably the most pragmatic answer. It's a pain to implement and only adds more complexity to my setup for a tiny percentage of customers; but on the other hand the more I dig into the answers, the more unclear things get

I use the old SE and even big company websites are broken on that screen size: if anyone from Airbnb is browsing this forum, your home search is broken on the SE, the date filter popup covers up so much space that you cannot actually submit
