Coming from a RingoJS background, I'm trying to address the first use case you mention with http://olegp.github.com/common-node/ - would really appreciated any feedback or comments you may have.

For those coming to JavaScript from Java http://ringojs.org & https://github.com/lhofhansl/RhiNodeII should be of interest. The performance improvements brought on by InvokeDynamic in Java7 are also pretty exciting.

That's cool, I had overlooked that. I guess the point is that there's no key value store for modules, whereas for packages there's npm.

You already have this with CommonJS packages and modules as used by Node, RingoJS, Akshell and others. The latest additions to require() mean that if you do something like require('foo') and there's a directory 'foo' in your require path th

A lot of the points raised are an issue only for long running processes. Akshell ( http://www.akshell.com ), for example, has synchronous I/O libraries and uses an Apache MPM like model, so for us the limits are less of a concern.

http://www.akshell.com is another one, although it doesn't fit under any of the headings since it's a JavaScript platform that doesn't use Node.

If you don't want the hassle of dealing with deployment and don't mind going all out with JavaScript, which you will need to pick up anyway, then let me recommend a startup I'm helping out: http://www.akshell.com We have a pretty straight

The problem with Amazon is that despite touting an open API, their infrastructure internals and practices are a trade secret, so the likes of Eucalyptus are having to play catchup. In other words, I cannot replicate their infrastructure in

Assuming the problem is indeed with EBS, I would say this should be a warning sign to anyone considering going with a PaaS provider, which Amazon is quickly becoming, instead of an IaaS provider like Slicehost or Linode. The increased compl

Agreed on the first part, unfortunately most functional languages are difficult for most developers (read: non-academics or HN readers) to grasp. As somebody who taught me ML said: "if it's difficult to write, it should be difficult to read

Because most webapps do not need to be optimized for performance, but rather for ease of maintenance. Asynchronous I/O is best suited for handling a large number of concurrent connections. However, in the majority of cases these connections

To add to what FooBarWidget said, I do believe that there are inherent advantages to using JavaScript on the server for developing webapps. For one, due to the dominance of JavaScript within browsers, it is the one dynamic language we will

We got 56,000 page views in the week when this happened to Akshell, but that was largely due to the fact that the story spread to Twitter. More info for anyone interested here: http://blog.akshell.com/hn-effect/

Would be awesome to see someone try this on Node or Akshell ( http://www.akshell.com/ide/ ) and see how it performs on server side V8. Could even add a real time, multi-user console to it.

The DailyJS tutorials are a great starting point for this: http://dailyjs.com/2010/11/01/node-tutorial/ That being said, I agree with most of the issues you raise. Lack of backwards compatibility, rapid changes in APIs and the need to bui

Further to this, a lot of the problems one has with the DOM and browser differences are a non issue on the server where you tend to work with much more mature engines, such as Rhino or V8. Our only minor gripe at Akshell ( http://www.akshel

I mean that if you're building a typical web app that uses the request/response cycle rather than requiring real time push from the server using Comet or WebSockets, Akshell, with it's synchronous I/O, should be easier to work with.
