This makes me appreciate kill switches more on the librem five phone. And it also makes sense why Apple doesn’t want you to be able to fully disable wifi on your phone.

This is timely considering Vitalik’s vocal support for Social Account Recovery: https://vitalik.ca/general/2021/01/11/recovery.html It’s personally something I love to see.

This[1] is a blog post about airlines that you will find very illuminating and enraging. The gist is that airlines are not anything like what you assume they are. Massive stock buy backs, zero innovation, record high salaries for C level le

It’s not difficult to switch friends to a new messenger if the UX is genuinely better. A great example is Signal. They invested quite a lot into UX in the last year and it paid off.

If Matrix / Element had a better UX, it wouldn’t need “bridges” as the best selling point. I use other messengers because I find their features to be better. If I preferred Matrix, I would use that without the need for bridges.

True, but proxying an app you use heavily to transition to a new platform can be useful. In any case, YouTube alternatives like LBRY have way better apps for android. Element (matrix chat) is also 100x better on android. I can only imagine

Ironically, leaving google is easier on Android because you can download and use apps without the App Store. For example, how is using YouTube via the iOS app any different _at all_? If you had android you could use the app newpipe.

There are other decentralized social networks (mostly up and coming) that run on distributed networks that aren't as brittle. For example, a network of nodes that balance all traffic rather than a network of independent servers that fe

Status uses public keys, but you can optionally link an Ethereum Domain Name (ENS). So it’s basically like license plates where you can buy a vanity plate if you want. Also, friends can just add their own nickname for you in their contacts.

The real bummer about optional typing is that it doesn’t speed up the program. I used it all over thinking that I was “optimizing” or helping the compiler. Really I was creating more work for it.
