No, you can’t. But you also can’t stop someone from screenshotting everything you do online. The reality is that most people don’t have hardcore enemies that go out of their way to do things like that. And if you do, you ideally would have

You can have decentralized p2p systems that respect users (allow deletes). One example would be Gun which allows you to “tombstone” your data. Just overwrite it with a blank. A new version of Scuttlebutt allows tombstoning too. I think muta

You may enjoy programming in Elixir if you like that style. In Elixir, you only program the “happy path” and just let things fail. Then you rely on supervisor processes to handle the exceptions/errors. Well, at least that is the idea

True! I'm thinking that something like Beeper[1] could be helpful there. They actually have an iMessage bridge even for users on Android. It's amazing haha. [1]: https://www.beeper.com/

That already exists in iMessage. They added custom user profiles, group chats are first class citizens and you can see all the photos in each chat etc

Not preventing spam was also the downfall of… oh man I can’t even remember the name right now. They built their own crypto currency social network. And added chat that uses Matrix protocol.

Moxie from Signal was completely correct that your contact list is your social network. Building off of sms numbers was smart. Apple Messages might be the best social media for me at the moment.

I support alternatives, but I would not recommend something to my friends that I know for a fact is a subpar experience. For that reason, I dont really recommend any alternatives right now, sadly.

You attract more flies with honey. I don’t see a positive message anywhere. I see that they’re against certain things, but what do they positively offer? Is the experience truly better or is it just “not THAT”.

Amazing haha. If anything, I think this just shows the importance of people with real organization and management skills. Institutions are important for sustainability

I prefer the decentralized messaging protocols that are incentivized by tokens. eg. Status / VacP2P (ethereum), Session (oxen), Sylo, etc. I know that a lot of people have opposite preference, but nothing is free, and tokens allow proj

The problem is the scaling. $10k to a billionaire is tissue paper. It simply doesn't matter to them. $1k to the middle/lower class could mean everything. My point is that this will continue to unreasonably restrict the lifestyle o

So does this automatically fetch every feed URL at intervals in the background as long as you have the browser open? Pretty simple solution for getting updates if so. No need to overcomplicate it with a dedicated server.

Idk why you're being voted down. It's a genuine design principle. Some ideas that come to mind that fit with "human first": - offline-first - human curation instead of algorithms (or at least transparent algorithms that

I think CRDTs necessitate a robust permission system to be more than a toy. If you want a decentralized CRDT, you'd probably end up re-inventing smart contracts (which is what I found myself doing once).

I'm sure Ada makes a reliable program, but wouldn't it also be good to have an Erlang/Elixir style "self-healing" system with supervisors that can stop and restart each other?

These tools should be halfway homes for a decentralized alternative. For example, when you make an account on Nitter, maybe it lets you post to both Twitter and also to a decentralized protocol at the same time. Eventually, you can get most

I've heard from career Elixir devs that the Pleroma codebase is not very idiomatic in terms of how it's all set up. I have to wonder if a Phoenix / LiveView activityPub server+client could be built that would be compatible wi

Imagine building federated tech with this. ActivityPub stuff like Mastodon, Peertube, etc. The performance on small servers would be incredible.
