Serious (non-snarky) question: are projects like this no longer standard fare for undergraduate CS majors? This example is rather comprehensive and well-documented, but is almost spot on what all 50-75 of us had to do for a Junior-level cl

It is a sad day for computing when - hackers can't read an RFC - hackers don't know octal - hackers can't trial-and-error an interesting behaviour until they see a pattern and learn for themselves.

I love these old articles. For those curious (like me) but too lazy to look, the current valuation of AMZN is about 116B, up from the 300M in the article. How long until we get an equivalent of "history" class for technology businesses to

On the other hand, LaTeX should almost be a required skill for developers and dev managers. If you use it rather than M$Office, your development docs can be source controlled, easily diffed, and otherwise gain all the benefits of code! De

This looks very cool, indeed. My only question is: is this mac-only? Puppet is great for deploying developer desktops (read: linux), but, as the presentation points out, requires a few K lines of code. Templates would be awesome!

(Mildly offtopic, but replying to my own thread, so TIOLI.) Just reading this makes me wonder how any person on this planet ever manages to successfully exchange work for pay. How did we get to a place where governments go on and on about

Thanks in particular for this! A perspective from Japan can be hard to come by and (as others will observe) tends to be different than elsewhere.

Doesn't run that well on my android phone, since my browser has only 2 modes of pop-up handling: deny all and confirm each. In firefox-ESR on Win7-64 it seems to get stuck in one of the SVG tests, unless it's supposed to take an extraordina

The series of posts is great stuff so far. I've long been curious about freelancing, both in considering it for myself during certain phases of my career and in wanting to hire independent folks in the near future. I've so many questions I

This might not work as well as they'd think. We did an experiment in my primary school physics class: hook a fluid pressure sensor up to the class faucet and start graphing the water pressure. We then sent a team to the restroom to flush a

Worse yet, how many users will write it off as a technical error, shrug, close the window, and move on to read other things? Instapaper has found a way to stifle the readership and mindshare of whomever they choose, that, for non-HN reader
