> Take your example, and imagine that it is Facebook the gatekeeper of the unique store? Key point: Apple isn’t Facebook, and Apple has made it a key of their marketing that they are protecting their user’s privacy. This isn’t a fact tha

With multiple app stores Apple will lose some ability to force app vendors to follow good privacy practices. For example, if Facebook violates Apple’s privacy policy now they can’t be on iOS. In a world of multiple stores Facebook can just

Are they talking about going fabless? I thought they’ve only discussed making some parts at TSMC, not all of them. They’re not on the first iteration at this point. They’ve been on 14 nm since 2014. 10 nm and to a lesser extent 7 nm is fail

So you’re getting more for less by eating out more often and not tipping? And you’re also saving more than ever? I mean, that’s cool, but I hope you don’t think you’re being altruistic.

Maybe. The amount of work to make a taxi service is much, much smaller than that to make a self driving car. I could see Waymo entering lots of industries like that to capture easy profits.

Generally speaking, the tests were writing the code in the notebook and looking at the results. At least most of the stuff I use notebooks for is either one off or difficult to test. One off stuff might be some exploratory analysis or glue

I suspect that the goal is really to ensure that cars on the lot are properly charged. When I was looking into a PHEV a few years back, everyone online was complaining the cars were never, ever charged. That had to hurt sales since PHEVs ge

No, in my experience, you are wrong. Becoming an industrial researcher trades some independence for money, steady project funding, and the opportunity to more directly impact the world. In return your employer gets first or sole access to y

I would be absolutely furious if a manager blocked my work from being published. Even a manager who has worked as a researcher, in my experience, significantly lacks the expertise to be making such judgments. A research manager’s job is to

I don’t know that taxpayers “thought” about the cost of the space program and decided to give up on it. It could be true, but that’s not how I’ve seen politics work. I think it more had to do with the fact that we beat the USSR and the USSR

People want something like a persistent REPL, and for whatever reason most IDEs have either not supported this or supported it badly.

I don’t disagree with your pessimism, but at the same time 9 years is an eternity to just install electrical infrastructure. Hopefully laws like this will put a fire under people’s asses.

This article falls well short of providing “the” reason. It presents a hypothesis and then supports it with a single data point. I also don’t see how indirect polling is going to put Nate Silver out of business. You will still need models t

At least addressing #1, I think people underestimate the fact that renting property is a business. If making your mortgage is contingent on both income from your job and your business, that’s a pretty risky position to be in. I’m not sure i

Even the battery comparison is generous because improvements in battery tech actually have made it out of the lab and into consumer products. Further, a lab battery actually functions as a battery, whereas a cure for fake mouse Alzheimer’s

It’s a precompilation hit, but it requires some compilation every time. Thinking about Julia like you might think about incremental C++ builds isn’t exactly right. A somewhat useful analogy though is that Julia is kind of like C++ template

I just tried it, and it took 13 seconds to load and plot some random numbers. It could be better but it’s an acceptable trade off for my usage. Not as good as Python in this regard, but much better than Matlab.

As opposed to being trapped in the C++ CUDA API? Julia isn’t that much harder to learn than Python. Does anyone really think the hard part of say, deep learning, is in learning Python or PyTorch?

There are very real pain points in Python, too. Developers tend to internalize these pain points to the extent that they’re completely blind to them, and that limits innovation. Not all interesting and fast algorithms can be vectorized. The

There’s been rumors of this, but it’s not confirmed. A big percentage of the cost of the 3090 (and 3080) is the GDDR6X. A 3080 with 20GB of GDDR6X will still be really expensive, so it’s unclear to me that they will actually release somethi

I’ve recently switched to VS Code, and the driving issue for me was really related to the popularity of the editor. Some combination of the LSP server and the chain of emacs packages to interface with that server were constantly broken. I c
