I haven't seen this multiple download issue with Firefox, but you may like the DownThemAll! download manager, it provides a queue, maximum downloads, bandwidth limits, and other very nice features: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

The greatest obstacle for me was knowing which tools did what. Many things I wanted to do in the shell I did not know were possible, and even Google is of limited value when your query is necessarily vague, though this has gotten a whole lo

This raises a question I have: Why on earth would you use Ubuntu on a server instead of Debian? I've always seen Ubuntu as a desktop-oriented distribution, and never seriously considered it when I chose Debian very many years ago. The only

No clue, but Java security seems to be a hot topic right now. OP's post history is very bot-like, a single fluff article every day, never more than one, and one comment on registration day, no more. But it's altogether possible OP is just v

No downtime at all since I got started with them in late 2007, except for a few reboots to activate free loyalty upgrades and one paid upgrade. I've never lodged a support ticket that was left unanswered for more than a minute or two. Very

Don't consider learning a language like CoffeeScript or ClojureScript until you thoroughly understand JavaScript. I think it's much easier for a beginner to learn JavaScript APIs (both built-in and third-party), which you'll need, from Java

It seems like snake-oil education is culpable, with folks enrolling in college for nebulous reasons. Young people are having problems because of student debt tied to degrees that aren't doing anything for them. The "everybody should aspire

What a utilitarian way of looking at things. Maybe the teenager won't be some top-dog talent scout, but you sure can find work in the music industry if that's your thing. Or taking care of sick dogs, teaching infants, whatever floats your b

It's awful. For ages, we've worried about The Government mounting cameras everywhere until the only private space was one's own home, and away from windows at that. 1984 famously envisioned a world where this surveillance extended to the

This seems like an exciting idea, but they're going to have to find a way to make the camera more discrete. People won't be comfortable always thinking they're on camera. I think these things will need to use cell phone technology to work?

More likely it is a people who have had to depend on cars/people who have not had to depend on cars divide. There's very little practical argument to be found in these threads on that website, just shrill invective. The "journalist committi

The big difference is that although Firefox is abiding by convention, all of these things are pretty easy to configure. I show my status bar, full protocol in the location bar, and so on. I can refresh with F5 or Command-R, things like that

Prediction #6 is not very ambitious. The only way several new "internet hangouts" would not emerge would be if the internet suddenly had ceased to exist.

You make a fair argument. Google has several state-of-the-art JS applications. I thought of Gmail in particular because it probably sees much higher demand and so matters of optimization are probably a bit more important to it. This makes t

People on comp.lang.javascript (which has its problems, and I've been away for a while) have been noting this for a while. jQuery chews far more cycles than comparable libraries with its function overloading, extra $(this) invocations and s

Well, don't provide a test like "you'll be in the hospital by #20" if you haven't vetted the results of it first. My personal advocacy for the Closure Tools does not discredit my views on other tools, and I'm hoping this ad hominem nonsense

None of the top five websites use jQuery. Of the top 20, I've got one fifth of them using jQuery: Amazon, eBay, Wikipedia, and MSN. Not in the hospital yet.

This is something I extracted from a plugin I wrote years ago, proj.vim. It is sometimes quite useful to be able to set a different working directory in a tab on the fly, particularly if you use tools that default to the working directory,
