I understand that you can't seek psychiatric help, or else you lose your clearance. And other fun stuff like that. In any case I know quite a few "decent human beings" who would not be able to get a security clearance.

No .. the US is hacking/spying on every worthwhile entity. And so is everybody else. It doesn't mean a thing about who the "enemy" is. This is the status quo; it's Spy vs. Spy. Example: http://intelnews.o

It's precisely where we're going. I thought I had to get my ears checked when I heard Obama talking about having 100% security at the expense of privacy and convenience. A nation demanding 100% security is a police state in the si

Brilliant. It's sad it lends itself so easily to spin, "The Chinese Turned Him!" I expect that is what Americans will be told to believe.

Why not just stand up and cool off? The focus of the story is privacy on the internet, and predictably it gets huge play on this website.

In my experience, it's vastly more likely that a mobile device loses reception, power, etc. than it is that my paper suddenly goes up in flames. I'd probably have bigger problems to deal with if that were to happen. Paper relies o

Yea, definitely! That's why, like I said in another comment, for local routes I don't really use a map unless it's some place I haven't been before. If I know how to get to the road the place is on, and can figure out wh

Sure, there's no problem with you and I agreeing to disagree. I'm of the opinion that the mind operates like a sort of muscle, and that you can be in or out of shape for a particular thing, mentally. As the mapping example goes, a

Regarding mapping, note I said I don't rely on point-A-to-B directions for local trips. For long trips where I am not familiar with my destination, I typically plug it into Google Maps (that might change now, though I know of no appr

In Stalin's USSR, that was not true. Generally there were folks (or even a lone soul) in every village answering to the state, expected to keep that area toeing the party line. Absurd meetings on party ideology would be held in the mos

Several of your examples are hard real-time systems. Garbage collectors, schedulers, etc. are a no-go in such environments, so you won't see much Python or JavaScript there, but that doesn't discount the value of those languages. Note that

Go is not a service, it is a language and runtime with open-source implementations. If Go is worthwhile, it will survive even Google shutting down. I don't see why you would find Go under Apache to be bad news.

Yes. Idempotency is just one property of the GET request, what parent described would be a DELETE request (these too are idempotent). So I could have been more precise and funny with that joke, I guess.

Well per the HTTP standard, GET requests should be idempotent. I kid, but imagine seeing pompous development advice stapled to official justification for some internet sleuthing!

I think the zsh-vs-bash debate is centered on minimalist vs. full-featured. For instance, the git completion example is very ugly in zsh to me. I know what git commands do, and I'd much prefer for the completion to take 1-2 lines total than
