Busting through NAT is really easy... The car could just ping home and open the tunnel by itself when it sees the appropriate signal.

Does anyone need to keep system logs for fifty years? Practically speaking, I'm fine with a constraint where the systemd database format + tools need to be roughly kept in sync. I can't think of a realistic example where this woul

Totally agree! You'd think that vendors would agree too, since it makes it strictly easier for engineers to use their chips and design them into higher value products.

You're right about the socket, but the problem is that every chip/board basically needs a custom bootloader - you can't just plug in a USB stick with a Debian AArch64 installer and go to town, you need a custom packaged blob

We don't have AArch64 desktops because it's not possible to build an AArch64 motherboard. There are no standard sockets -- and every ARM vendor starts their system using a proprietary, inscrutable Rube Goldberg machine. On the Ras

You can move when it gets too unbearable. You wouldn't be able to do the same with your savings.

I agree with you that the authors probably tried to make this clear. My suspicion is based less on "sneaky pollsters" or "stupid people" as some comments suggest, and more on my observation that people tend to rush throu

I agree with you in principle on this particular example, but where is the cutoff, and how often will it move? Will it move accurately, or will inflation be used to sneak it downward?

1. Many people rent, and have never seen a property tax bill, despite paying it indirectly via their landlord. 2. It's not the same thing. You can choose how extravagant a house to live in relative to your total wealth and your income

Sure, but if you understand this concept, you're not likely mistaking wealth for income on a survey.

I think this is likely even if the survey authors we're careful with the wording, which I believe they were. Several responses are blasting me for thinking that people are stupid. I wasn't trying to claim that everyone made this

I'm skeptical that most respondents understood the questions correctly. Most people are familiar with income tax, because they know that money is removed from their paycheck every month. Many also file tax returns. A wealth tax, where

I mean, you're right. But on the other hand, this is ten years overdue, so I'll take it. Do we even have a real licensing story yet? I can see this going one of two ways... the ARM way (chipmaker pays the license fee) or the video

Do you have any evidence to support your claim that Hotz has done anything resembling "deep responsibility"? Because from the scraps that I've managed to put together, he seems childish and irresponsible.

I think your assumptions about what is hard and what is easy to detect need some recalibrating. Alien life forms wouldn't need to use technology to make themselves harder to detect. It's extremely difficult by default. They would

We know how to detect laser / radio transmissions pointed at us . You can't see a laser transmission off-axis if there aren't any stray photons reaching your detector - that's just physics. You can't detect a radio

True, but without radio transmissions, I bet we would spend decades arguing about whether it was actually an asteroid and a measurement anomaly. We can't really distinguish a rock from a Battlestar at those distances without physically

I think you could increase the guess to 1,000 or 1,000,000 species and the outcome would still be basically the same. We do not know how to detect life outside of our solar system. The only way our measurements would change is if one of t

Seems weird to require both an internet connection and radio broadcasting from the UAV in operation, but that seems to be what the rule states. Why not either-or?
