You... might want to reconsider that analogy. Claiming that News Corp is a media company is somewhat tenable. They sell "media" direct to consumer, among other things, and media is an end product. Claiming that Google is an ad com

And that's exactly what had everyone else scratching their heads, too! There are plenty of slow random number generators. They're easily built from cryptographic hash functions [1]. Heck, use something like Bcrypt as your hash an

As an ogre, I have to say I'm offended. But as a programmer, awesome job Code Combat! Your turnout was pretty inspiring. I'm a little sad at the observation that American kids were such trolls though. I mean, I don't know wha

Do other markets not buy from the Play Store? Or rather, if they don't, how would you sell your app to them anyway? It is nonsense to develop a for-profit app tailored to people who can't buy it.

This looks great! I love that there is no account required. However, since I can use it without an account, why would I register? You may want to add some motivational copy to the registration page to tell me. Also, these two statements fro

Almost by definition, there is only a secure access continuum for known points of attack. Once you breach the access layer--no matter how it's done--the game is over. - One copy of your data that is publicly writable is very insecure -

Ugh. You say this as a joke, but I vote we come up with a list of features that could be cited as prior art and stick a hash of 'em into the BTC block chain.

Apparently it matters to the good people of Marshall, Texas. According to them, Whitfield Diffie didn't invent public key encryption for exactly that reason. Yeah, I'm more than a little bitter about the technologically illiterate

Same thing here. Personal story short, I discovered--thanks to the internet--that having hypothyroidosis and taking L-Carnitine [1] can cause rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney damage. 3 doctors completely missed huge warning signs and prescri

Am I the only one surprised to find that Carmack was still working for iD? I had thought his taking a position with OculusVR implied his departure months ago.

Am I missing the link to actually get a peek at the dashboard? All I see are account walls. I like the idea, and I'm interested -- but pardon me if I say this looks like an astroturfed conversion funnel and not a genuine submission.

For the sake of argument, let's say I agree with you. What are the corresponding points in those scenarios off the top of your head where being forced to use your full, real name is a middle-ground good? I can't see a benefit to t

If you recently joined, you can't. I just went through this yet again, and they now have a "14 day period" where you can unlink. After that, as far as I can tell, it's permanent.

Does that not prove his point? There is no functional requirement for gold in jewelry now that so many cheap stainless alloys exist. Why not make jewelry out of plastic? The answer is: we, as a species, value gold far beyond its usefulness

Thank you for posting this link! I've had no luck trying to get people to take the attack presented by the original paper seriously over on Reddit [1] and hadn't seen this critique yet. Still, I would have liked to see a more tech

An open-source environment is really the only place this kind of motivation could work. As you say, if the project is intentionally buggy, it's unlikely to be used. Love the idea!
