In that realm, one example I've seen pop up a lot where some kind of video needs to be shown off is "Big Buck Bunny" [1], a project to build an open movie using blender. [1] https://peach.blender.org

The recent Cosmos remake has a good episode that touches on this. I think it's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Immortals_%28Cosmos:_A_Spac... One theory set forth is that earlier in Earth's history, while ba

This looks interesting. I'm familiar with the basics of investing, but have never gotten into quantitative analysis. Does anyone know of a good starting point (book, online course, anything)?

Wait, you can use the Yoga as an external monitor for another device? That's sweet.

I don't think you can argue that the western ego isn't bruised and battered in recent times. There have been a lot of false starts in the past 20 years where we were hopeful western ideas would take hold in places where they haven

Anyone think a remote directory service would work well if a lot of your infrastructure is hosted elsewhere? I wonder if latency would become an issue. Also, how hard is it to set up/care/feed a basic directory service? I've

On a side note, I got a request to push me notifications from your site. That was a tad unexpected/annoying from a blog.

I ran into issues deploying HTTPS this past week. Two things of note: - Android is super strict with certificates...make sure you properly order your server and intermediates - Check your site on: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssl

Anyone have experience trying to colo one of these? The $/GB and Ghz aren't bad when you depreciate the upfront cost of the mini over a few years. I've seen hosting in the $35-50 range and nearly bitten the bullet several tim

Two questions: (1) Anyone use Varnish in front of Rails? Is it better to just set up some memcached and/or redis and let the app handle it? (2) To deal with session-specific stuff, how common is it to render some common plain html view

On the topic of automating train functions, one of my biggest pet peeves is when the conductor is responsible for [inaudibly, or plain just not] announcing stops. DC and NYC are really irritating...NYC is automating it on some lines though.

For the past 2 years I've rode Acela weekly between NY Penn and Washington Union Station and it's a breeze...show up 10 minutes before the train leaves no problem. Definitely beats flying or driving if you're going to/co

Hi Andrew! It's cumbersome but at some point you might want to consider LDAP/AD for enterprises who want to hook into it as well.

How does Flynn compare to OpenShift or Cloud Foundry? Is it trying to solve the same problems, perhaps leapfrogging them in some ways? [Edit] I would also ask the same about Apache Mesos since that seems like it's coming up a lot in th

So this might be an aside, but given all the complaints about how expensive Heroku is (despite the free tier, how they handle everything below the app, it's the gold standard in PaaS) has anyone tried out competitive services like Clou

I've had the same overall experience as kohanz with Rails. Little toy apps do work but details are sparse while trying to troubleshoot things. I'd probably wait for Flynn to mature and look at that before investing much more time

Would be cool if you could double-click the column-border to have it auto-size to the contents in the column to the left of the border, comparable to excel.

With WiFi direct, I wonder if this'll finally bring Miracast/WiDi mainstream. Maybe the ability to stream audio and video wirelessly is a niche feature, but for me Airplay is the one thing keeping me on Apple's platform.

That Rovio bot looks cool...two questions: 1. Looks like it's been out for a while. If you were getting a similar thing today, would you stick with it or go for something else [1]? 2. When you drop the beaglebone into the Rovio, would you a

This is awesome. I don't know what's more satisfying: actually tearing the cloth to pieces, or the fact that my 2009 13" macbook pro can run it smoothly without stressing the CPU.

I'm pretty sure you can find cheaper. Last year I lived right across from the 91st St Y in a similar sized 1BR for $1600/mo. Check out streateasy.

I too was shocked at the deltas between Amazon and dedicated hardware. I think AWS runs on Xen, so I wonder if you could strike a more optimal performance/flexibility balance using lighter virtualization (LXC or OpenVZ) with either in-house
