This implementation should be avoided; it is weird, buggy, and unnecessarily complicated. In particular, using some pseudocode to simplify: rb = new RingBuffer(... capacity=3, orderedReads=false/*the default*/) rb.put_all(A,

Autotools is designed to solve one very important problem: how do you build the GNU tools in the first place if all you have is some obscure Unix from the 1980s. If you already have gnu make, gnu bash, gnu binutils, gnu coreutils, etc. inst

In practice, Guile is usually not compiled in. Whereas I've never seen a version of make without `load` and its supporting infrastructure.

Part of my point was that "check for contention" is often a silly thing to do in the first place, when you can just avoid it entirely (and with simpler code too). Admittedly, Java is fundamentally incapable of half of the solution

That last question is a cryptography question in disguise; the answer is "the fact that SHA-1 collisions are still impractical for most people".

Yet, the whole crate model giving up on ABI stability as a goal hurts a lot, both for performance and for sanity. Why aren't people designing modern languages to make it easier to keep a stable ABI, rather than giving up entirely?

Gullibility has nothing to do with the logical question of "is this a free speech concern or not, and if it is is it in the subset covered by the Constitution?" You can't oppose chaos while giving up on rigor yourself.

Huh, that's ... still quite inefficient. Since a multiple variables in a cache line is fine if all will be accessed from the same cpu, you ideally want a separate allocator for that, then you can avoid all the spooky dynamic growth.

You're wrong in this case. All you have to do is replace the target and it becomes obvious. If a scientist currently or previously spammed papers of the form "why Nazis were right all along", we should all hope the governme

There's only one game that has ever given me nausea - the video game of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace (1999). [Not to be confused with Starfighter (2001), which was also based on Episode 1 and I think more popular?] It's

Okay, honest question: in what world is a magnitude 5.9 a "major" earthquake? 5.x earthquakes happen multiple times per day somewhere , and the same area had known much worse earthquakes in the preceding century. How bad do your

Okay, but even with that (though I really don't think there were >20% increases in any year prior to the ACA ...), all we get is my original point of "Obama promised change, but just provided more of the same."

IIRC to decode raw zlib or deflate using only command-line tools, you have to prepend the gzip header and stream while ignoring errors at EOF.

Eh, I don't think the "it's all based on Paul" can be a reasonable argument at all. Even when people do argue it, they only ever allege the same 2 points, which even assuming those points are valid would only be a tiny f

Despite what news headlines love to say, I'm not sure "circling the wagons when someone is caught" has been accurate in the English-speaking world since the 1990s. Often it's more "please don't blame the people
