It's only trivial for someone who has used MATLAB, taken a machine learning course, or otherwise has similar experience. I'm sure the biology people know this is automatable; it's the "easily" part that's the problem.

Interesting. I just enabled this on my machines. Is there a way to find out whether ECN has been successfully negotiated?

Don't forget that humans also have a pretty good accelerometer and sound processing built-in, which helps. But it's true, we are much better at object detection and recognition.

To me "once it's launched" means it's a cathedral design where no one will see what's going on with the project until some future date. I'd prefer it if third-party contributions were allowed right away, and I'd be completely fine with only

One thing I noticed as a Haskell noob is that the terse syntax makes it impossible to Google for solutions. Say I'm trying to understand a code snippet. I have to know what the (insert random string of punctuation) operator is called before

There is a world of difference between a proper typesetting engine (such as LaTeX) and HTML-to-PDF. Box layout, hyphenation, ligatures - the list goes on. Of course, optimizing the typography in your resume is likely unnecessary. But that d

Some shameless self-promotion: I wrote a Chrome extension for downloading Udacity videos ( http://nzmsv.github.com/udacity-dl/ ). If there's any interest in a batch version I could look into it. Alternatively, feel free to write it and let

Even the people who have been accepted into YC and have impressive resumes have their self-doubt: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3655582 Here's an idea: write down the questions from the YC application form and treat them as a todo l

I looked at your blog and saw that you are in Kingston. There are techies here too, so you might not even have to travel much :)

The little white box could incorporate an Ethernet switch. Then just reconnect an existing device on the network through it, and sniff traffic to find out the MAC.

I think the answer, as usual, is "it depends". It can be bad when the open-source portion relies heavily on the closed-source components to function properly. One example: when Linksys was required to release their Linux-based router firm

This depends on the definition of "complete". Yes, you've described a pretty comprehensive summary of the web stack and related tools. But this is all application software. What about the underlying network protocols? The OS kernel? Th

I found that turning off AdBlock has dramatically reduced my browsing of time-waster sites. It's also a sobering reminder of what the web looks like to most people, and it's not pretty.

Nitpicking here, but this would be a URI rather than HTTP feature. It is described in RFC2396 and is just part of how relative URIs work.

Not my proudest moment: once I set up a chroot with several directories using "mount --bind". Then I didn't need it anymore, so I promptly issued an "rm -rf *".

Little known fact: only the webapp part of Pandora is IP-restricted. The media servers are open to the world. So as long as you can load the player through a tunnel, the actual mp3s can go through your normal connection.

I would add the use of the ControlMaster and ControlPath options for connection sharing, as well as keepalive settings for those cases where connections drop when idle. The remote port forwarding feature can be very handy. I've used a comb

I don't think these reviews are real, but similar things have happened. One example: Stephen Cook was denied tenure at Berkeley (before the NP-completeness paper). Another: Svante Arrhenius barely passed his PhD defence (before getting a

Changing "sed -E" to "sed -r" and all instances of "==" to "=" makes this script run on my Debian system. Unfortunately, it leaves the terminal blue when it is done.

There are some simulations that squeeze everything they can out of a GPU or a cluster or a TOP500 machine. And I don't think arbitrary precision can be done easily on a GPU; if someone knows more, I'd love to be corrected on this one.

There's a magic "nfpr=1" flag in the query string that seems to revert back to the old "did you mean" behaviour. Sometimes it randomly fails though. I don't know if this feature is going away with this update.

That's the problem: in many recent machines ASUS has used Elantech touchpads to save money. These are are absolutely terrible: they don't even have pressure sensitivity, let alone proper multi-touch.

One way to check if there is in fact some truth to a bit of folk wisdom / superstition is to see how universal it is. I was born in Russia, and have never heard about the sugar+hyperactivity thing before moving to Canada. At the same time,
