I personally liked the Hyperion duo better, but found all 4 books to be incredible. As for Ringworld, I didn't enjoy it, but would be willing to give Niven another try if given a strong and specific recommendation. Maybe something that

The sequels have some big and original ideas that I don't regret being exposed to, but they were painful to get through. Especially the 2nd book. It took me months to finish because I just couldn't stay interested.

What was the explanation again? The only one I've heard is that they lied to us so that medical first responders would have masks available. Which seems strange and unforgivable if true, seeing as how a simple piece of cotton fabric ea

I would describe it more as taking the substance I've already decided to take regularly and speculating on the effects that it might have on various parts of my life. I certainly don't have fitful sleep anymore.

Here's what I wonder, and this is somewhat tangential to the issue-- the effects of cannabis are thought to be disruptive to some of the various stages of the sleep cycle, but at the same time, it can sure help you to achieve a full ni

I don't know about you, but I don't really want my various encounters with the police to be broadcast to the public. They would need to algorithmically blur out all of our faces or something in order to make that palatable.

SpaceX was talking about trying to recover the 2nd stage back in 2018, Elon suggested they would use a giant "party balloon" and land it on a "giant bounce house." I haven't heard any talk of progress made since the

This is a great point and is also true of Facebook and a number of other platforms. Roger McNamee spoke at length about this issue with Sam Harris on his podcast back when it was called Making Sense. His point was essentially that the AI th

Bob needs to work because Bob wants to buy nicer things and lead a fuller life than sitting around playing video games in a dirty shack like Fred. Bob's work isn't subsidizing Fred's lifestyle unfairly (at least under Yang&#x

What's wrong with competition as a price control? Isn't that the basis of capitalism? If someone else wants to raise their prices because "free money" then I'll just keep my prices the same and steal all their busin

On the Diamond Princess Cruise, they found lung damage in 54% of asymptomatic cases. I would call that a cause for concern. https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/ryct.2020200110

A vaccine isn't the be-all-end-all. We can still potentially hold out until there's an effective treatment. Famotidine? Remdesivir? Anything that would reduce the severity of the infection would lead to a better outcome than you&#

I read that there was visible lung tissue damage forming the characteristic broken glass pattern on CT scans of 58% of the infected but asymptomatic carriers on the Diamond Princess cruise. That to me adds a sobering footnote to the process

I have to agree with this. If exaggerating health claims about a plant is what it takes to convince the country that you shouldn't be thrown in prison for choosing to consume that plant, then have at it. The older generations will find
