I embraced an iPad w/ paper-like surface during my grad degree, simply because I needed the organisation (annotating papers, multiple subjects, project notes, etc.). It worked really well for that. Funnily though, professional life is

This is a funny question to me, because my entire career (mostly small companies/small tech depts) I've never reported to an EM. It's only when I moved to big tech that EM-who-doesn't-code became a thing, and it took som

My worst nightmare about the impact of this poorly implemented law - requiring UK citizens to submit their real life identities to private websites.

I pretty much have the opposite feeling about Deadlock after putting 200+ hrs into it (not that much but enough to understand the game). There was a recent streamer that said it best: the game design fundamentally punishes you for engaging

If it is something I want to remember I stick it in Obsidian. If it’s more immediate I keep it as a saved tab in Chrome.

I’ve never had 8h of battery life on a Thinkpad. More like 3h. Also my last two T series stopped working completely after ~4 years (dead motherboard / broken usb-c ports / cracking casing). The speakers, screen, touchpad all suck

> Paradoxically, good design is self-effacing: bad design is often more impressive than good. Rings very true. Engineers are rated based on the "complexity" of the work they do. This system seems to encourage over-engineered so

That’s actually why I don’t like discourse at all. If your community site needs loading icons I don’t want to use it.

It’s classic big company syndrome. Stupid performance processes, obsessions with metrics above all else, the MBAfication of the entire leadership chain. It’s basically impossible to build a good product in this environment. All big tech has

Probably not? The fundamental issue comes down to background GC and CPU quotas in cgroups. If your number of worker threads is too high, GC will eat up all the quota.

Exact same thing happened to M$ in the late 90s/00s. At some point the MBAs and money chasers come in and it's just downhill from there.

I'm trying to understand the rationale behind this. US's global superiority has largely been driven by programs like the NSF, making the US the world leader for r&d and inventing completely new industries. Why would you comple

Ah yeah I guess I wasn't clear. I meant use ansible w/ the docker_container command. It's essentially docker compose - I believe they both use docker.py.

Traefik is waaay simpler - 0 config, just use docker container labels. There is absolutely no reason to use nginx these days. I should know, as I spent years building and maintaining a production ingress controller for nginx at scale, and I

Basically what c0balt said. It's zero config and super easy to set everything up. Just run the traefik image, and add docker labels to your other containers. Traefik inspects the labels and configures reverse proxy for each. It even ha

Just do it like the olden days, use ansible or similar. I have a couple dedicated servers I fully manage with ansible. It's docker compose on steroids. Use traefik and labeling to handle reverse proxy and tls certs in a generic way, wi

I still don't know how to "go back" after viewing a video on the mobile app. It's so confusing. I just keep swiping stuff and eventually it works. The google maps app has similar bizareness. I guess somehow this all make

I think you had to use the proctoring software. Some people had a dedicated USB stick and would just boot onto that for exams specifically. TAs have to review any flagged exams. I'm pretty sure it's required for the degree's

During exams you mean? They swapped to honorlock which seemed way better and less invasive than proctortrack. It’s a necessary evil unfortunately.

I recently played Dead Space Remake and it is fantastic - from the limb-separating game mechanics to the out-in-space eerie atmosphere, there is nothing quite like it.

Yes, probably out of date. Memory management was always the JVMs Achilles heel (either long pause times or too much memory usage). If that’s fixed in recent JDKs, awesome.

The creators thought that having 50% of your codebase be `if (err != nil) { ... }` was a good idea. And that channels somehow make sense in a world without pattern matching or generics. So yeah, it's a bizarrely idiosyncratic language
