Thanks for the first hand perspective! My comment was based on watching this talk: https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/event/kubernetesclu... . Kris Nova quotes Joe Beda saying they "rewrote Brendan&

Actually, k8s was written in Java originally. Then basically verbatim copied to golang. That’s why you have this ObjectMeta stuff - it was trying to implement an OO system in golang. Lots of weirdness can be traced back to the Java origin.

OMSCS has a similar course, https://omscs.gatech.edu/cs-6457-video-game-design . It's a semester long project based class where you build a game in Unreal Engine with a small team. It's a pretty awesome class.

I mostly agree with this. I'd say compared to my undergrad, the teaching quality is overall better. Which makes sense, since pedagogy is much more of a deliberate focus for OMSCS. I think this is a big advantage to online programs actu

5-10% for top schools typically is where I got my number from. MIT, Stanford, Caltech, UCLA, UCB all are around this range for CS. Slightly more accepting schools jump up to 10-20% range. But all these schools are rejecting huge swaths of q

What do you use as an alternative to Dropbox? I haven't found anything that works as well across multiple platforms. I really hate all the feature bloat in it, which I never use, and weird decisions like dropping non-ext4. But still, f

Have you heard of OMSCS? The online revolution is already happening. Many schools are moving to copy the model. I've been in OMSCS for almost 5 years now. I can assuredly say that remote university education works incredibly well. Even

I agree with what you're saying. It probably took me about 2 weeks to build my first NixOS desktop about a year ago. Now I manage everything in a single repo, including all my dotfiles, all via nix. It works great. But there was a very

Exactly. direnv/lorri basically solves the per-language virtualenv nonsense, but universally for anything. I use chezmoi to manage my shell.nix for various directories. That way every project can manage its system libraries independent

Oh definitely. The whole concept of immutable OS management - this stuff all comes from NixOS's influence. You see it in Silverblue for example, and other mainstream distros. They are a pale imitation but the influence is there.

NixOS and the nix package manager are revolutionary OS tools, hampered by a convoluted, undocumented language and library (itself called Nix). Despite this, I think it's totally worth going through the pain of learning Nix to use NixOS

I know it’s pedantic but I despise the semicolons in Rust. They make the language ugly and constantly burden the programmer unnecessarily. It’s a bizarre choice for such a modern language.

Take a look at some of the android watch faces people have made. They make Apple Watch faces look amateur in comparison. I also don’t understand why Apple has closed that ecosystem. It means I’m stuck with the mediocre watch faces of the 3

That’s a ridiculous equivalency. You can provide high quality education to all without USSR style communism. In fact I’d argue the long term success of a capitalist system relies on it.
