I'll play devil's advocate. Your marriage doesn't sound like one of equals. You're doing a Masters while working full time I imagine. So who picks up the slack for household management? I'm guessing your wife. If yo

Virtually no legal consequences for them. Virgin is also one of the worst consumer business I have ever interacted with (and this includes many big US ISPs with bad reputations). The company is beyond dysfunctional.

PIA (yeah, I know they are owned by a dodgy company now, and I sound like a shill by suggesting them) does really well. No problem maxing a gigabit connection, and their peering is even better than my ISP a lot of the time - I get lower lat

Interesting... maybe I should try again. I didn't have much luck on Virgin.

I really like Mullvad, but I personally found the speeds to be pretty poor. It's been a while since I used it, but I remember not even being able to hit 100mbps download at times. On the other hand, in my experience, competitors can

Imagine you're a streamer with OBS and you need to patch your mic, game sound, music stream, etc. and adjust all the levels. It's a PITA to do this kind of thing with pulseaudio - which seems to have been designed with the model o

I find Sealand fascinating. Imagine founding an off-grid location as a data haven, and it got popular. What would happen? I can see covert operations from foreign governments happening for example, driven by copyright lobbyists. Would they

I didn't get that take at all from the why-rebuild link. It seems reasonable to me - legacy code base, hard to maintain, with security problems that led to the massive data leak a while back. They also don't owe anything to anyone

I couldn't agree more. Anyone that thinks a company can hide/avoid all government (legally mandated) requests is just incredibly naive. I don't know why the anti-protonmail spin exists. Protonmail does the best they can, as f

I had my first experience with real burnout a few years ago. I took my first fully remote job at a completely dysfunctional company. It was a very frustrating experience. Unfortunately, I didn't have the luxury of taking time off like

Have you tried installing a gaming mouse driver on MacOS? Same deal. When I used it, MacOS also had the issue that some software didn't even have uninstallers. So you have to drag the app to the trash bin, then go and manually remove t

Maybe things have changed, but when I went to career fairs as a uni student in the 00s they all asked for my GPA. Less than 3.5 was pretty much an instant no.

I'm not really sure what you're saying applies. Animators in the US make good salaries and a good living in contrast. Japan has an unusually exploitative structure and culture where animators can produce huge amounts of value, but

For all the complaints, people will continue to jump through the hoops given an engineer with 3-5 years experience can make close to 400k in TC/year. That is not happening anywhere else outside of FAANG and certain finance companies. G

It’s a good idea I think, yet I’ve never been emailed in the 11 years I’ve been here. Maybe the things I say aren’t interesting enough :). Then again, I never emailed anyone either. I did have one scary encounter a few years ago on HN where

I’m inclined to agree having seen this exact thing happen myself. On the flip side, the same reasoning is why most gifted programs have been cancelled in western countries. I think a good education system should cater for both.

Hmm interesting. I suppose I could have read too much into the IGN review saying control played at “smooth frame rates”. I suppose we’ll have to wait for proper benchmarks to know for sure the performance.

It's been measured around 7 frames of lag, so 120ms [0]. PC in comparison is around 2-3 frames of input lag. That thread is pretty old though so may be out of date now. [0]: https://www.resetera.com/threads/hollow-

The IGN review says it plays Control at medium settings at 60fps. That's roughly double the performance of a GTX 760 I believe (which is around 30FPS at low settings @ 1080p).

Switch is infamous for adding lots of input lag to its PC ports (like hollow knight). Not to mention the abysmal online experience. The steam deck looks like it will destroy it for any third party title.

Not sure I agree. I feel like the majority of AAA PC games are designed for console first and work well with gamepads. At least the ones I play. It’s also just more relaxing since you can lean back.

Buying raw JP Blu-rays is just ludicrously expensive. A recent show, Vivy, is 13 episodes on 6 Blu-rays. Each Blu-ray costs ¥8800. Including shipping and duties, that is around £500 for me to order. No wonder people pirate.

Youtube is probably the worst, but even Netflix has this problem. I have seen so many terrible encodes on there and the streaming bitrate is usually quite low overall. Watching dark scenes in shows on an OLED is particularly aggravating.

It gets annoying after you've replaced them 6+ times in the space of a year. Personally I just gave up and avoid using joycons or live with the drift when I have to.
