It already recalibrated, didn't it? Much of that compensation is stock - of which its value dropped 50% for Meta.

I was there too. I was also 17, and went with a group of friends and a dad who was an MD that volunteered for the medical building. We met Wyclef Jean who got treated there after burning his hand. It was quite an experience. Being a relativ

Walking without distraction is a pleasure that I rediscovered recently. It’s been great for my mental health. I also seem to solve problems out of nowhere on my walks.

Okay, I get what you're saying now. As an alternative, you could hold it in landscape mode - then you can press the buttons with both hands without having to rotate it.

London based contractor here. It's sort of hard to say since rates keep going up. My gut feeling is 700 outside/850 inside would put you in the top 10%.

I bought a Kobo Libra 2 recently and it's fantastic. It only has buttons on one side, but the display is fast - it typically adjusts before I finish rotating it.

It's insane to me that we don't at least: 1) Require regular re-certification of people's driver licenses, and have much more stringent tests. 2) Mandatory speed limiters in all vehicles, using GPS to limit speed based on loc

Probabilistic data structures are pretty cool. Count-min sketch [1] is another one. It gives a reasonably accurate count of different events, even millions of unique events, in a fixed memory size. It shows up a bunch in high volume stream

I did nope out of this process last time I was looking, when I moved out of the US and my kids were young - because I just didn't have the time for it. I took a huge pay cut, but I accepted family > career. Since then I managed to a

For me it’s the insane hazing ritual of the tech interview process that makes me want to leave the industry. I’m going through it again now, and honestly am pretty miserable. It has a large negative impact on the rest of my life and my ment

Most people can't casually throw away 10k to get better at interviewing... I'd say for us non-wealthy mortals, the best approach is to find another engineer who will conduct mocks for you. Short of that, maybe do one or two paid m

There's been various studies on it (1), nothing super conclusive, but general medical belief seems to be eating shortly before bed (< 1hr) disrupts time to go to sleep. 1: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl

Indeed. For lots of us, 2 hours a day is basically all the free time we have with family and other obligations. Spending all your free time for 6 months-year is a pretty brutal proposition, not to mention a huge ROI risk if you don't g

Are you sure it's not the OS X chroma issue on external displays? It has some bug with the EDID exchange, and doesn't use full chroma - making everything look blurry. There is a way to fix it [1], but it's pretty insane Apple

Lots of great advice in here. I am curious about: Turn on the lights to 100% 30 minutes before waking up. Has anyone actually tried that? I do have Hue lights in my room so I could set it up. But I'm really sensitive to light (even the

What if you wake up in the middle of the night? I can go to bed consistently and easily - the problem is I'll wake up at 2am and not be able to go back to sleep. Sleep hygiene doesn't solve it for me.

I'm imagining it's a similar situation with Intel too, which explains why 90% of their models have Intel mobile processors, despite being outperformed by AMD.

I've been happy with my X13 Gen 2 AMD 32GB. Even has a nice screen at 2560x1600@400 nits. Keyboard isn't as good as my ancient Thinkpads, but still better than anything else on the market. I agree though that Thinkpad offerings ca

Haven't the police in the UK been chronically underfunded through a decade plus of austerity policies? I get the feeling they are so under water, they can only deal with the most serious crimes.

I’ve had a similar experience. It’s usually obvious to all the ground floor engineers when the building is on fire. I’ve left roles twice where shortly after there were large layoffs, including a fairly well known startup a couple years ago

It’s mostly about avoiding code and work duplication. At scale, the waste on duplicate work across teams can be massive (think about setting up CI tooling for example). Mono repo let’s you solve tooling/build problems once and for all.

I think the symptoms are pretty similar, the main difference from what I understand is burnout is triggered by repeated stress from work, and it's a mechanism our brains use to defend against that kind of constant stress. Typically it

For me, the sign of burnout is when it becomes very hard to do anything and I find myself procrastinating. So I'd say procrastination is a sign of burn out on the horizon. What happens next is you force yourself to do things anyways, a

Doctors are an interesting comparison, because they also have gatekeeping in terms of how difficult it is to get the credential in the first place. That early filter basically guarantees anyone with an MD has a certain level of competence.

My main usecase for Alexa is also multiple timers while cooking. It's very useful - prior, I would juggle multiple independent timers on microwaves/stoves/fridge.
