I appreciate where this guy is at. After work you should do what you want to do. If that includes sports, going out and eating nice food etc, good for him. That is a balanced lifestyle, and worthy an effort to make. I am kind of the opposit

Honestly, as long as you stay hungry to learn, there is a high chance you will be fine. This has always worked for me.

Interesting time for them to be pushing this, considering the EU thinks it may take business from London due to loss of passporting over Brexit. It could now reverse with firms leaving the EU to avoid the transaction tax.

One good route to more senior / management roles is to be an architect. The problem with that though, is your spend more time with your node in microsoft powerpoint, then you do in an IDE.

That's why as a 40+ engineer I am always pushing myself to learn new tech. It's evening here in the UK, and while my kids are sleeping and my wife is catching up on her soap operas, I am just taking time out from learning GraphQL

Thats very much the same approach I take. As long as I can keep learning and expanding what I know, I don't think I will go to wrong.

Executionable which won't run on my machine (Fedora) and not open source, guess I will be staying with Advance Rest Client then.

Access to information has been a double edged sword as well. I am one of the pre-internet oldies and recall how you had to go to the library, and find the book on the topic you wanted to research. It was a case of hoping it was there and no

As someone senior myself, I really don't mind the easy to answer, quick questions. It's when people dump real time sinks onto me that will cause me irritation, as I then need to manage my time and realign all my own pending tasks.

The timezone differences are going to be an issue. We have a couple of Japanese guys in the same team as me, and its tough going. We have a small window in the morning to align on projects and if we ever need to do face to face meetings, we

So will this result in yet more of my daily life being ferreted away in a data centre somewhere, with me having no control over its persistence?

What is USB-C like? My experience with USB in general is it's a PITA if you need to insert / remove on regular basis. The sharp edges scratch at the plastic, and you typically always try to insert it at the wrong angle first try,

I keep meaning to learn Linux from the ground up, by following the bootloader assembly, kernel initialisation etc and be able to track it in the kernel code, but its so vast I forget half of it, as I try to make my way (sporadically) throug

I hope I don't sound conceited here, but this was me and I resolved the issue. Meditation. 15 minutes a day is all it takes, and I get myself to that place of not giving a care in the world and feeling all the stress just drop away. Th

I did not mention it, in my other comment, but that was another key aspect which put me off. When I was single I could have gone along with it reluctantly, as worst case I could come back home and sleep on a couch of a friend if needed, but

I can't be done with doing a 'lottery' to work in the US. I got offered a senior position (distinguished engineer) with a large San Jose networking vendor, and looking into the H-1B circus put me off. Perhaps when I was fresh

They are not allowed at GCHQ. I once visited CESG , and was told to leave laptop and phone in the car or at the desk. I spoke to one of the guys working there about 'how did he find it without having a mobile', and he replied that

Quick question if I may. I have a very keen interest in trying this course...is what you build (hack) using actual physical circuits / components? Or do you run it all in simulation?

Quite hard to comment without context. This guy might have just been left behind, and was working on some soon to be obsolete language and never made any effort or interest into learning something new.

"The paper is awaiting peer review. This means the results have yet to be critically appraised by other experts." Difficult to comment on this, it may be illuminating a real factor, but without seeing what data they used, or how t
