He is actually correct that in an OOPL data type definitions are spread out all over the place In a typical OO language all the code belongs in classes, and there is no way of telling which classes define the essential data types and whic

I didn't say forking inherently doesn't work. Both nickb and mattmaroon are old timers who wanted to create valuable communities themselves, not just to create distractions and attract a lesser crowd or something.

EC2 has been in operation for a few years now, and the price levels from the launch remain unchanged, despite the fact that their largest expenses are subject to Moore's law.

Looks cool. How would it compare to Amazon/Alexa search service? In theory they allow you to build your own search engine, but in practice you can't really amend their ranking formula and don't get access to the raw inverted index (with tf-

You overestimate the importance of AdSense. Search ads have much more clicks per page view because they are better targeted. Google generated 67% of their revenues in Q4 2008 from their own site and just 30% from the AdSense network.

Yeah, but I think it may be useful to collect such metrics (and e.g. get it to cost karma). For the record, English is not my first language and I do make mistakes, but I strive to write correctly.

The mechanisms of popularity are interesting for hackers (at least for me), but hardly anyone understands them. Adding more anecdotes and celebrity gossip isn't helpful.

According to this thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=374416 Git is particularly bad for large files, while good old SVN handles them Ok.

I guess the reason he can't do the same with vmware images is that git is slow with huge files. On the other hand, vmware snapshots should allow what he wants - to keep several closely related versions of the system and the ability to start

The name is supposed to be an easy predictor of quality. There is a cognitive cost to read all these comments, you know. That's why you look at current karma of the comment and see if you recognize the nickname.

Don't get your point... Mine was that the solutions to machine learning problems are inherently messy (at least this is the state of the art).

It's like a startup, except they have huge resources and the impact they have won't be measured in any way (while the market is brutally honest with startups).

And groupthink we have. It would be a fun experiment if pg turns off for a while displaying the current karma of comments and/or posts. Ranking would still give some hint what is popular, but that would be much more subtle and I think group

Actual ranking at the time of your search does not involve too much computation, because a lot has been precomputed and stored in those Google indexes. In theory, you can view every search as a function of your query and all the web documen

My feeling is we'll see another hotornot kind of development here. Markus will try to go with a paid model, fail - because his thinking wouldn't work in the new context, and either sell the site or leave things as they are now.

It's not a techie/non-techie distinction, it is about level of exposure to wikis and similar things that people have. Ten years ago techies didn't get wikis either.

I didn't pass any sort of judgment. I simply said I wouldn't want to be him. And then you mentioned all he got is his name being written in the history books. And then did an ad hominem attack on oakmac.

Who said getting rich doesn't matter? It is what matters to you that is important, for all values of you. Being rich didn't matter to Ghandi. If you do what you love, you are likely to be happy, even if you are not rich. If you just love mo
