Right now all netbooks sold out there have a camera and it is mostly used for video calls with Skype. I don't think netbook manufacturers would give such a major feature up. I see Google has videochat in GMail with a browser add-on, perhaps

If you can't run Skype and other instant messangers, interenet experience is going to be incomplete. I wonder of they are going to do something about it.

This sounds like the same approach Microsoft ASP.NET has: try to fit web apps in the desktop GUI event paradigm. Is this correct?

The web market works, of course; the app store is just a specific distribution channel that has its advantages over the web: * everyone who needs to do something on their iPhone goes to search the app store even though a web app could serve

What about http://www.archive.org doesn't work for you about #1? It's centralized but this is hardly a practical problem; search is also centralized and much more important.

Understanding written text is a universal problem and even minor improvements would matter. Syntax highlighting for natural language is a possible improvement. I have tried variations of this with no success so far: parts-of-speech tagging

I have thought about it as well. The signals that could determine relevancy in your browser history are likely different form the ones that determine it for web search, and measuring engagement with a page is a good example (it would help

A quick Google search says TV ads in prime time is $25 CPM... How is online targeting better? The site might have a demographic profile, it can avoid showing an ad more than once per user, but it's nothing like search targeting...

The latest Linux I use (Ubuntu 9.04) uses M and G prefixes. My point is it's a mess and it's unreasonable to claim proper rules are followed. E.g. how do you measure hosting bandwidth? A random calculator ( http://www.ibdhost.com/help/bandw

Then, OSes get this wrong and calculate storage in GiB. Also when I see a 128 GB SSD I somehow expect this to mean a proper power of 2, not to mention it should be addressed similarly to RAM.

I agree with your arguments, but they apply to non-vector code as well. Perhaps higher level programming using the right primitives is good enough in most cases.

You can - I use the WiFi Discover app for this. But the iPhone is not suitable for long reading - small screen, battery - get a dedicated ebook reader instead.

This is the point of all the status updates, link sharing etc - it's stuff to talk about. You wouldn't send a link to something you thought is cool to all your friends, but posting it on your wall is Ok because you are not interrupting them

Lock-free algorithms can be very fast, but they are also hard to implement. It seems Redis is going to get some lock-based pessimistic concurrency control eventually: http://groups.google.com/group/redis-db/browse_thread/thread...

Does anyone know what is the concurrency control used by Redis? I couldn't find anything related to transaction isolation in the docs.

You could keep data in ram and dump it occasionally to disk (which is way faster than committing every transaction for itself). Replicate among few machines to deal with failure scenarios. But RAM is still more expensive than Flash.

Flash based storage is better than disk because there is no seek latency (the time for the head to find the location on the rotating platter where the data in interest are stored), which currently is the major bottleneck of databases. Also

RethinkDB seems to implement a functional btree on a log-structured storage. This would involve lots of copying, I wonder what is the performance impact of this (compared to a less pure implementation that copies the modified nodes every th
