And anything I can think of that I'd want a sound card to do these days is being handled by GPUs - like that NVidia AI noise cancellation, where your kids can scream 5 feet away and no one can hear them on Zoom.

Pure digital audio and huge hard drives killed them. Back when we were chasing better and better synthesis - FM, wavetable... because playing back CD quality digital audio wasn't possible - you were lucky to have 23kHz mono, or nothing

The port is a modified Atari port - they wanted to sell you their own joysticks, and save on a port, so they came wired together into one port. I had a Y-adapter that let you use standard joysticks.

Texas Instruments had a similar standard from around that time called HexBus, but it didn't make it out into the wild after they ended their home computer division. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex-Bus

You started with downvotes but showed up with the links. Neural VDB looks wild - I can see games going nuts with detailed, interactive volumetrics now, with such a tiny memory footprint.

Also, you're at the mercy of the algorithm on Fiverr. I had a successful voiceover side gig for a few years, a thousand completed orders and 100% 5 star reviews - one day, the algorithm changed, and poof. Game over, in an instant. 0 or

Thanks, I think I'll give up on my desire to have side gigs now.

Skimming this makes me long for the time when the multiuser nature of Unix was really utilized as intended. I miss being on a system and typing "who" to see who is on, and starting a chat with them with "talk". Or sendin

No, the Immaculate Conception refers to Mary having been conceived without being marked by original sin, not that she didn't have a biological father.

I was introduced to Scrum at 2 companies that didn't use Scrum this way, and am currently at a company that uses it exactly as you describe. It was a shock and it's a real pressure cooker.

We don’t know that the amounts of radon found in residential environments is harmful because it’s never been studied. The claims about the number of deaths caused are arrived at by starting with something we do have knowledge about - the ma

No. I even have a radon mitigation system. I just don’t think the science that led to its installation is rigorous. It’s a basement not a coal mine.

I feel like we are talking past the sale here. Is rainwater actually unsafe to drink, or did someone just change a number in a spreadsheet? After I learned about how residential radon was determined to be the “second biggest cause of lung c
