In this industry severance is common, which often includes some amount of continuation of coverage. You are then usually eligible for COBRA, a law that lets you continue your current policy for 18 months self-funded (often expensive). You h

It's pretty hard for a software engineer to get bankrupted by the US healthcare system. As long as you maintain your insurance coverage, your biggest worry is the annual "out of pocket maximum", which is the most you can pay

The geniuses bombed the entire planet for generations with their COVID response ideas. I shudder when I hear them talk about "dimming the sun" next. Could use a little less "genius" for awhile.

Yes, you have to learn how to build a minimal pom.xml to make this compile and run. IntelliJ will do this for you with its Spring Boot project template. After that, it really is this easy. I consider the boilerplate needed to build a main.g

When I get a really good spicy time going, I get a kind of tunnel vision and feel like I'm in an altered state. Space and time seem different. I used to think I had no limits until I ate a Carolina Reaper whole. The pain in my mouth wa

It's definitely a different experience playing with an automapper. I played the game with grid paper as a kid, sometimes memorizing the easier levels and sometimes laboriously mapping out the levels as I went. I played EOB2 with the ma

Often when I write a TODO, it's because it's because I'm not going to remember to write it down anywhere else. I'm certainly not opening JIRA for it, so this is as good as it's going to get. Every once in awhile we

I was about to say I built this beautiful IVR for a taxi company 20 years ago. It was so good, solved so many of the annoyances I had observed with IVRs before… so perfect it was, that it remained untouched all these years… I was about to

The first gen watch was very much like the first gen iPhone - a cool tech demo on underpowered hardware. It was supported far too long, and with its final updates it was barely suitable as a timepiece. It couldn’t handle the most basic of t

I had an 85 Honda Prelude and 88 Honda CRX and they both needed a little gas when you let off the clutch from a standstill or they’d die. My 2000 Miata could make it, but it would lurch and complain loudly.
