"Average" users have been taught to use strong passwords for a long time now.

This attitude makes me very angry. Even if 80% of users don't use capitals in their passwords, the 20% who want that added security don't get it. Even if you believe this made-up statistic due to your condescending attitude towards "normal"

That's exactly the problem here. A typical user who adds capitalization to make her password more difficult to guess is basically screwed over by Blizzard who has decided that passwords don't need to be case-sensitive. Users who opt to (I

My fault. I didn't explain properly. I didn't mean it in the normal way- to require strict passwords. I meant in the sense that users who do add a capital in order to up their account security don't get that security added. Only users who k

This is not the point. Users are put at risk because Blizzard fails to adequately impose security. Tech savvy users can just use a stronger password, but the others are put at risk by what I can only call negligence.

I do see improvements. I often see information captured from the top result and displayed in the box at the top of the search. I've had better results on ddg on numerous occasions. http://ddg.gg I don't have any further disagreements.

I haven't had that problem at all. Most of my searches are technical and I rarely have to switch to Google. I would suggest giving it another try every few months if you aren't satisfied with it.

This is where the !bang syntax comes in handy. In areas where ddg isn't quite "there," they offer the !bang syntax. !gm {query} or !gmaps {query} will redirect you to Google maps.

>currently there is no reason to switch to them How so? DDG offers privacy, something that Google and other big search engines do not. That is more than enough reason- especially with growing privacy concerns in the US.

You aren't. I've seen the debate a few times on HN, and I've had it with friends who also opt to use DuckDuckGo. It's "a bad name." It isn't evocative, it can't be (easily) made into a verb, and it lacks brevity. I don't really like the nam

I can't reply to you so I'm replying to myself. I honestly thought you were going for full anonymity. In fact, my first thought was that you were taking it a step further than 4chan and that it would be interesting to watch.

Pretty misleading. The whole point of your experiment was to see how people would act if completely anonymous, right? They aren't. So your experiment is flawed.

Let me start by saying that the notion that XSS can only be used to harvest cookies is a very common misconception. The truth is that, with XSS, any action a user may do on the vulnerable site (that doesn't require a password) can be mimi

It doesn't matter what the common use-case is. BitTorrent is better than traditional server->client downloads. "Oh, pirates are the most common users of BitTorrent? But BitTorrent is better than traditional server->client downloads.

I was commenting on the specifics things you mentioned (sans redirection to pages that don't exist). Slowness, lack of good formatting. That sort of thing. I'm certainly not saying that half-baked is the same as minimalist, and I'm also not

I don't think there's anything to debate there. It's just a matter of personal taste. I find the whole minimalist thing to be very "hacker-esque" (if that's the right way to say that).

>The lack of polish with HN is part of the charm really. I do agree with that. However, there's a big difference between polish and usability. The lack of polish may be charming, but usability flaws are anything but charming.

I wouldn't say the employer is wrong (I don't think parent was saying that either), but that the choice was naive. The company saved the the wages of 10 temps and only paid the guy $2 more. He should have asked for more/something more long
