You misinterpreted what you saw. I fly a lot and most airline gate agents are quite strict about enforcing carry-on bag limits. They frequently pull passengers out of the boarding line and force them to gate check extra carry-on bags. The o

I live in the Bay Area and I don't understand that. Layering is a stupid hassle. I'll put on one jacket of appropriate thickness when I go outside and take it off when I come inside. Simple.

You've got to be kidding. I'm not going to waste time on a trip washing laundry by hand. Just pack another bag, and if you're staying longer then pick a hotel with coin-op washer / dryer machines available for guest use.

No major commercial airline allows a passenger to put 3 large suitcases in the overhead bins: it's one carry-on bag in the bin plus a small personal item. If I'm going scuba diving, especially technical diving in a cold environmen

OK well then let's check back here in a few years to see if any of them managed to build an AGI. Until then it's just idle speculation. Anything could happen ... or not.

I haven't painted myself into any corner. You're making entirely unsubstantiated claims based on zero scientific evidence. Sad.

Your numbers are way off. Most people who file bankruptcy have some medical debt but medical debt is seldom the primary cause of bankruptcy. When people suffer a loss of income or get overextended then they tend to prioritize their housing

Spear phishing isn't a real problem. Competent organizations have already implemented sufficient defenses and controls, regardless of whether the attacker is a human or LLM. Idiots will continue getting scammed but that's nothing

That's a non sequitur . While the frontier LLMs are quite useful for many tasks there's no reliable evidence that scaling them up will ever produce a true AGI. More likely some other fundamental research breakthroughs will be nee

Delusions of persecution by the CIA are a common symptom of paranoid schizophrenia. It's very sad.

That's just political signaling, not a serious bill. It wouldn't stand up to a legal challenge.

There are some ignorant people who don't understand the technology and make wild predictions of catastrophe. It's very strange.

What a weird comment. Most people who go through bankruptcy don't become homeless. And most people who go through medical treatment don't become bankrupt.

Nah. Most of those collisions are preventable if you pay attention and drive defensively. You probably don't know much about driving but it's actually possible to control the environment in most circumstances.

Other HN users keep telling us that we should support dense housing development. I think those people have never lived in an apartment complex with trashy neighbors.

Cars aren't even lying. In a modern car I really am safe, powerful, and in control. And the air conditioner helps keep me alert.

How exactly does the healthcare system cause people to crash their cars, abuse recreational drugs, overeat, and commit violent crimes?

That's a non sequitur . The healthcare system has very little impact on life expectancy.

Where healthcare is free at point of use, many of the advanced cancer treatments aren't available at all. This is one of the reasons why the USA is at or near the top in survival rates for most types of cancer.

How exactly would the government ban training runs? Like how would that work? What would the legislation text look like? And how would it be enforceable without running afoul of the vagueness doctrine?

Large merchant ships are extremely efficient in terms of CO2 and other pollutants released per ton of cargo. I agree with ordering less stuff when practical but most of the emissions happen due to manufacturing and use, not transport.
