Castles create a different strategy. A walled city is an egg, you have a lot of area to attack and when you get through there's a treasure inside. A castle is a pebble. It can be crushed, but you have to put in a lot of effort, you get

I'm not really sure that Europe was that helpless. IIRC the mongols basically couldn't take European castles. As you go further west in the 1200s you start seeing higher population densities. Poland, Germany and France are all rou

Programming is about defining requirements in excruciating detail. A business person says "I want this data stored somewhere" and a programmer has to define where it comes from, what the schema is, what transformations happen, how

An individual is an individual. Individuals make up a group. You can apply statistics to individuals in a way that you can't apply to an individual. I'm repeating the word to make a point. Your second quote might say "individ

IIRC the original concept of DRY wasn't "Don't Repeat Yourself" (that's the pithy version that's easy to remember but wrong). I think it was more like "A piece of knowledge should be found once in a code b

Yeah, I was surprised to see that Neuroticism was a technical term for a phenomenon with a well studied gender gap. If you don't know that it sounds pretty mean.

Employee gets sexually harassed by manager, tries to retaliate but can't prove anything. S/he leaves the team, but now they can't find any work in town because the manager put them on the blacklist.

In fact, this might be legally protected speech. I don't know how applicable they are but there are a few old pro-union laws on the books that prevent people from being fired because they were talking about improving the workplace or b

This is one that really misses the mark. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution says that the government can't persecute you for your speech, but Free Speech is a separate principle that says that we should allow a free

These aren't sub applications, they're more similar functionally to classes, although they tend to end up a little larger in a lot of cases.

I don't like to think of a lot of these languages in terms of "functional". Haskell specifically does follow a functional paradigm, but Erlang/Elixir is more about the actor model and the functional aspects support that.

Christopher Tolkien is also qualified to fill in the gaps. He was one of the original editors of LOTR and I've heard that he may have been the one typing parts of it. He's essentially a co-creator of Middle Earth, although definit

To be fair, there's also a general purpose option for both AWS and GCE. AWS has the M4 and GCE has the n1, something in the middle for either should be good enough for most applications.

From what I remember, oddly shaped houses were actually pretty common. Remember that most cities didn't have central planning so you'd just get a plot and build something that matched.

You do realize that the object model is just data bundled with functions, right? If I'm using Erlang I can pass in a map that has something like #{ data => [(data)], methods => [(functions)] }. The object style approach is orthog

Wikipedia has a misleading description. Red side had completely unrealistic technologies, things like motorcycle messengers that could travel at the speed of light and fishing boats that could launch missiles as large as the boat. The Day 2
