Some of the hardware choices that Backblaze has made in their pod design are interesting. Most of the concerns I have (like the difficulty of getting to drives to replace them) can be addressed by operational practices (update the swift rin

As we were developing openstack swift, we evaluated many different file systems and settled on xfs because our testing showed it to be faster than other file systems when storing many small files (where "many" is much more than the number o

Completely agree. When deploying Rackspace Cloud Files (Openstack swift), we tested several SSL-terminating load balancers (throughput, not connection/sec), and we found the best performance with Zeus. Pound was the best in our tests for op

Copied from serverfault: Since you are looking for storage numbers, I'm assuming you are referring to swift, openstack's object storage system. Swift by default stores 3 replicas of the data. This means that total storage / 3 is your billab

Power consumption and cooling will, of course, be very dependent on your chosen hardware and hosting (DC). Yes, swift can handle heterogenous drive sizes. For example, you can start with 2T drives and start adding 3T drives when they become

I'm going to lean towards swift, but then again, I'm a core dev for swift and I haven't played with riak/luwak. Swift is ideal for storing static content (backups, web resources, documents). It's designed to be very scalable (both with conc

I'm a dev for cloud files at Rackspace. This is something that we are getting with Akamai. Content will be able to be served compressed or uncompressed based on the Accept-Encoding header. So you will be able to store your uncompressed cont

OpenStack is designed to be a collection of projects that together can be used as the basis of a scalable cloud deployment (public or private). Currently, there are two big projects in OpenStack: nova and swift. Nova can be compared to EC2.

Obviously, a new programmer's code will not be as good as an experienced programmer's. I think the important lesson here is to "write code". "like you just learned how to program" modifies "write", not the code. I found myself in the same p

FWIW, non-block storage services (like Rackspace Cloud Files and S3) should not be vulnerable to these info leaks. I cannot speak to the S3 backend, but this sort of attack would not be possible with Cloud Files. Of course, the use case is

Nice interface. I do see one issue, though. Click on a file in a subfolder, then click on a file in a top-level folder. Both remain highlighted. See the screenshot for an example. http://c0280441.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/Screen%20

The confirmation email isn't a bad idea. I wouldn't mind it too much. Perhaps a simpler idea though is to make sure the users can easily delete data or routes that are sent in via email. It doesn't really solve the "spam" routes that could
