If your IRS refund is your only form of saving, then spending it on a MacBook Pro takes you to a whole new level of bad decision making.

Sure, if you hold 51% of the equity, and even then it would get messy. The power to hire and fire is (usually) the CEOs, devolved from the board. The board is (usually) appointed by the equity holders. For some set ups reversing a CEOs deci

The patent system is a attempt at achieving a noble goal (rewarding inventors) but in my opinion it fails both at: - Generally failing to reward innovators. - Encouraging more benefits than it costs to society. The former is because: - Gene

I have been using the Safari/Chrome inspector a lot recently to clean up the cross-browser version of The Plan Is. I'm probably biased because I learned how to use Firebug first, but it always feels like Firebug was designed to do what de

A lot of people do input validation by disallowing 'bad' characters. The idea is to stop people buying JavaScript in comments, as that would be bad. Just strip enough characters that you can't do functions and everything will be... ...oops.

It would also be good to see some announcement of launches by HNers (not just YC funded). Set a cap of 2-3k karma or something to keep the volume down - a bit of promotion would be a nice reward for those who do a lot to keep the community

GPL/BSD licensed software doesn't have to be free as in beer - you are perfectly welcome to charge for it. (The challenge is how to keep charging for it since anyone you give it to can also sell it or give it away.)

Compared to the average vendor library license even the GPL is clear, concise, unambiguous and friendly. The biggest advantage is that once your lawyers approve the (L/)GPL, Apache and BSD licenses for use you get access to a vast range of

I don't know, the Cambridge-grad-only dating site seems to be pretty popular. Elitism can be a powerful motivator, especially for people thinking about settling down and having kids. Late 20s and no kids yet is a demographic with a lot of d

It's common to set systems up so that any emergency numbers dialed go to the local emergency number. Our dialing plan directed at least 112, 911 and 999 that way, I'm not sure about the others. A combination of trying to do the right thing
