Let's suppose all that stuff is absolutely true, that when Sam Altman was a 13 year old kid he assaulted his 4 year old sister, that she's troubled because of it, and he made some attempts to buy her off, perhaps money in exchange

There will be more noise, at least in the near term, so people have more "content" to attach ads to and more chances to win the SEO lottery, and people use generative AI to pad out their work to look more impressive. So, we'l

GPT-4 is not immune to making things up, and a smaller model that doesn't have as much garbage and nonsense in its training data might achieve results that are nearly as good for much less cost.

For those six days they could. But even if we need fossil fuel as backup for some time, burning a lot less of it means we don't cook the planet as much.

I get out and hike, since there are so many great and beautiful places in the SF Bay Area. I hate running, so I climb steep hills to get some cardio.

It might help to be more specific. Can you give an example of the communication problems? Depending on the details, it might be helpful to ask him if he can think of any changes that could be made to make your working relationship more effe

As you say, LLMs currently don't distinguish instructions from data, there is one stream of tokens, and AFAIK no one knows how to build a two-stream system that can still learn from the untrusted stream without risk.

Lots of good criticisms of the traditional way of teaching in here. The only issue I would raise is his claim that Bessel functions should be dropped. In physics and engineering they come up all the time when the geometry is cylindrical. I

I looked at it. Their FAQ says that they aren't a prediction market, and they operate differently. People aren't placing bets, so it isn't weighted in favor of the wealthy. They weight people based on past prediction success.

We have no way of exploring the multiverse or running the same election more than once, so there isn't any evidence that the payout from a prediction market matches the probability of something happening. It's just collecting the

A major source of conflicts I see in development might be resolved if we had something like a four-way merge. Consider this case: we have a base version, and two changes have been applied to that version. Change 1 adds a function at a given

I wasn't aware of that. Perhaps they never re-implemented the version from Bell Labs so they didn't have a free program (other than the GNU one) that they could release until more recently?

Note that three-way merge is much older than git. It's implemented by the diff3 program, which was part of Version 7 Unix from 1979 on, and the same algorithm is used by CVS, Perforce, and pretty much any other revision control system.

No. The math libraries are written in Fortran 77 for the most part, which did not have pointers. I should have been more precise about that.

If you want the code to run slower, yes, you could do that. Because there are no pointers in Fortran, only arrays, and because arguments to functions aren't allowed to alias (let's ignore the horror of COMMON blocks for now), aggr

Authors of articles in publications rarely get to write the headlines. However, Hacker News people pay inordinate attention to headlines, so we see statements like this: "trust in the scientific community ... gets eroded" because

No, but there was an unreasonable one. Microsoft Foundation Classes, which preceded the STL. Originally, Their CString class extended the capacity in such a way that appending one character at a time had quadratic cost.

They are interested in short-circuiting, so only &&, ||, and ? do that. They would want to avoid the evaluation of b() in a() => b() if a() is false. But !a() || b() does that. So it seems that the proposal isn't needed. a i

If the problem fits into the pandas/numpy/scipy framework, it runs fast, because all the math code is in Fortran/C/C++ and the Python is just the top level control.

It wouldn't work, because in the early days of 4.xbsd, whether page 0 was mapped or not depended on linker options. Originally page 0 was mapped, this led to problems with people being sloppy with null pointers, so the default was chan
