It seems quite mature already, runs Rails and passes 100% of the Ruby specs. I think it's going to become the default in JRuby, but probably not before Java9 comes out, which includes a crucial component that enables Graal to sit on to

I was kind of hoping for a document that outlined principles to make the engineering process truly antifragile, i.e. one that would thrive under contingencies. Honestly, I have trouble fathoming how such a thing would be even possible in th

I'd be more interested by pointers for Javascript front-end principles, because I feel like I'm lacking some background to understand much of what I'm encountering, whereas there's quite a bit about machine learning (whi

To contextualize the discussion on "open access" (the practice of editors that ask for a sum of money in order to make the paper available). It costs a lot: about 1k for ACM venues. Currently I have to pay for this out of my own b

I tend to agree but don't overlook the downside of rfcnt loops. It's quite easy to introduce them (for instance, when creating closures in Objective-C), hence negating the big selling point of gc in the first place.

So in summary: it's great because it makes more money. The implication that this leads to a better movie offering is dubious. Would you say better movies are coming out now than 10/20 years ago? Even if more movies are coming (whi

You don't really provide an argument in favour of your point. I, for one, question the notion that life must have a "meaning". Life is action, a sequence of distractions, one after the other. If your meaning leads to you to t

Windows NT is quite sound technology. At least the kernel. On the other hand... the kernel doesn't matter. It's the userland that poses problems most of the time. In in this domain, Microsoft is much much ahead of any *nix except

Ah but you can't. The GC will still pause and trace no matter what. As far as I know, you can only control allocation at the level of "retainment": you can keep something from being GC'ed by keeping a reference to it. Po

One flaw in this article is that it assumes "naive malloc/free use". It assumes that a program written in C and in Java (for instance) will need to perform the same amount of allocations. This is far from the truth. First, C

I've never ever gotten any good results with a Java profiler. HPROF runs, but its results are garbage. Yourkit and VisualVM are apparently not able to handle the heat of a CPU intensive application and crash or are generally unusable (
