I always used my stereos build in timer and a death metal CD for the same effect :) But now my stereo and my CDs gather dust and I (and my neighbours) do not miss them.

Great idea. Possible improvement: Only show the effect if the user uses the tab key. IMHO the effect is distracting if you use the mouse and are already looking at the focused object.

Why not? It is text only and at first I did not even notice it. Hopefully not only the HN crowd will play the game so it would take a exrtra "Show HN only" landing page without adds to get rid of them.
