Now that I actually try it, I think you're right. I had assumed that the browser would load the external JavaScript, parse it and execute the code. I understood that the code in the page (the src built by the coder) was not going to be comp

I'm sure there's no ill intent here, but I don't think it's a good practice to hotlink. If those running stdicon were so inclined (or if they were hacked), they could easily initiate a massive XSS attack.

Thanks for the info. I wish the focus, especially for the AP program, was less on what the industry is doing and more on what is best for becoming a successful computer science student. If a student is taking an AP course, they're not looki

This quote is astounding: "What I discovered is that our Web sites are being 'scraped' by other companies -- our competitors! Some of the information on our sites is valuable intellectual property. It is provided online, in a restricted man

I wouldn't think that most of the queries are executed that often, given that the "sites" are so unique. I'd be curious to hear more about how they utilize caching.

What caches are they referring to? DB caches? Anyone know what tools they may be referring to?

Do you have a link to a good "getting started" article written for a desktop user? (someone looking to encode nice looking videos, not build an encoding infrastructure) This seems like an issue with a great deal of nuance, and I'd find such

This attitude is one reason that I really like the Django community. I've found, almost without fail, that most Djangonauts are friendly and patient with the framework's users, new and old alike.

I don't think Simon's argument has to do with adhering to American standards. In fact, he explicitly states that he's interested in creating an "inclusive environment" for women developers. How quick are we on Hacker News to pass judgement

Agreed! This is a perfect market for innovation to succeed. If a quick Google is to be believed, Norm Wu is a EE+MBA. I think healthcare is a field where some smart people coming from outside the industry can make some big improvements on t

I know that it's popular to bash Java and .NET right now, and that it's popular to hype Erlang, Scala, Clojure and Hadoop, but I don't think that replacing Java or .NET (frameworks, both) with a great language and Hadoop (written in Java) i

Yes, that's what I meant. Quicktime streaming, too. Basically providing a way to jump around in a video, even if the video hasn't been been buffered to the point you want to play. Again, nice looking site and service!

It's a slick site, but the lack of streaming from the CDN would be a deal breaker if I were looking for a Web video hosting solution.

As progressively dumber programmers build progressively more complex systems we will see more of this kind of attempt to paper over coding mistakes with lawyers, sanctions, policies, and laws. How very true.
