It's illegal for US corporations to do deals directly with several governments. Syria most likely bought the gear used through gray/black market channels.

This is actually pretty big. If I'm interpreting this correctly, Google arbitrarily stack ranked employees then dropped the lowest ranked one. Courts thought that process was unfair, opening up the door for every single ex-Googler in I

From a systems engineering perspective: Any marketing, at all, in documentation really complicates my research. I was already interested in the product, and I'm trying to solve a problem with it. I understand the use case. I don't

Assange wrote some code for a pre-nmap port scanner. If he'd chosen a different path I think he would've been a pretty decent security researcher.

Registering blunt disapproval may stop the behavior temporarily, but what caused it in the first place? It can't be entirely due to a general passive acceptance of such statements. Our approach to ending racism was similar, and it was effec

You know what I'm tired of: condescension. The guy who was making sexist statements is ignorant, not a "fucking loser." How do you make these situations positive for everyone? Empathy. Empathy for all sides. Everyone exposed to this kind o

Like I said initially, my concern is only tangentially related to the server stack. Oh I'm not advocating serving less clients at the server or even limiting the sockets available at the server. It's purely a critique of the number of sock

If the Woody Harrelson AMA has taught us anything. Do a legit AMA or don't do one at all. Although I'm surprised more people aren't calling him out on completely dodging the questions.

ATI acquisition. At the time ATI was 1/2 AMD's market cap. Too much of their capital got tied up in the acquisition and R&D fell off. The overall vision is still very, very compelling (integrated FP co-processing). At the time, AMD figu

1st hand from engineers. I don't think you've been misinformed, I personally think the marketing of the 20% time idea is better than its actual implementation. Pitching the 20% time ideas to management is kinda killing the concept. Managers

The concept is really easy to implement with smaller teams. But look at Google. Their "20% time" policy has become 120% time. Scaling these highly creative, productivity inducing policies simply doesn't scale when you reach a certain size.

Putting a time frame on the commoditization of particular technologies is really, really, really hard. Most of the big ASIC design shops (was at one for a few years) have to design a feature 2 - 3 years in advance and hope to god that it be

Totally agree, but there are protocols in place to tunnel layer 2 domains to encompass multiple data centers. VMotion between DCs is not as crazy as it sounds, it's just prohibitively expensive.
