If your response to someone publicly calling out your bad behaviour is to try ushering them into an alley where nobody can see, that speaks volumes about your intent. This article presents a distasteful world-view that "Good manners ar

Some nice thoughts on human values and technology rooted in the Greeks. I've bookmarked Luke Smith's site. As a Digital Vegan [1] who is also a computer scientist I do have to reconcile my "love of technology for its own sake

My ZX81 had audio. The ZX81 was so badly shielded with its thin plastic case it would make nearby radios go crazy. You could tune a MW radio off-station, put it close to the computer and listen to code executing. It made different sounds de

This piece by Stephan Uhrenbacher is a good example of counter-psyops that I mentioned in some recent comments here. For some reason those comments were down-voted, perhaps because people feel instinctively uncomfortable with influence oper

What is striking about the language of this letter is the conspicuous absence of users as stakeholders. "Police and thieves in the street, scaring the nation with their guns and ammunition" This is what we have today. Our conversa

For most ordinary people this stuff is hard. Why would you not trust your ISP or a mail provider like Google? To correct this we need to start education at a young age. In other threads we have discussed ad-nauseum why email is almost impos
