Until you find a snippet of config you want to copy into your `application.yml` in Spring or Quarkus (Java frameworks). If it doesn't paste in cleanly (and it rarely ever does) you'll need to go research the schema and find out wh

The demo song from that thing will forever live rent-free in my head. Sometimes I sing it to myself, and then pretend I've switched the lead instrument to a sample. (hi, hi hi hi, hi hi hi, hi hi hi hi hi....)

"Overhired" is not always the best way to describe "hired with intentions to do things while capital was cheap". I saw a bunch of startups and larger that really did intend to build things. When hard times hit, some shut

I'm dying to know how Delphi fit into the CGI mix. Or are you just using Delphi 6 as an "era" marker. I too was using Delphi 5 and 6... and Kylix(!!!) during the CGI era, but all my web stuff was Perl/Python and some Tcl

I actively fight for removal of lodash in every frontend codebase I encounter. The cost is just too much. Often I run into developers who tell me there's some sort of webpack plugin to treeshake all the `import _ from 'lodash'

While I am extremely excited that these may someday make it into the language, I actually would be fine with `.hashCode` and `.equals` on the Object prototype. structuredClone, if I'm not mistaken also allows cloning functions/Map

I'm not a fan of it there either. JavaScript, since its earliest days, had `private` as a reserved word. Typescript makes use of it. It conveys perfectly what the Class member's visibility should be. Using `#` might be easier on p

I used Gleam for a day of Advent of Code. It's a cute little language. It has some Rust-isms, some Elixir-isms... I'd love it if it became more popular.

Hurd any day now, right? I do wonder what this landscape could have looked like if all of the effort had gone behind a Mach-based microkernel. I read all of the back and forth between Tanenbaum and Torvalds. At the time, I was just so excit

When your business model starts as advertisement, you may be okay. When it devolves to advertisement, you're on life support. When it devolves to forcing a funnel by breaking existing functionality, you're dead.

I hope this becomes a trend on HN: <some person>, <how one might know them>, has died. I'm so used to seeing names I do not recognize, having to take the time to read the article.

I have an XPS 15. And while I liked that I could bring my own SSD and RAM, the build quality is nowhere near a Macbook Pro... like not even in the same galaxy. I had to have it serviced multiple times within the first few weeks. It had to b

I haven't been a Ruby programmer for 10 years but I totally agree on Eloquent Ruby. I sure did love that book. I still pick it up sometimes and thumb through it. I did a reading group for Getting Clojure (another book by Russ Olsen) ju

You can say a lot about Microsoft the company. You can even take digs at Visual Studio Code and its "telemetry reporting". But LSP is one of the best things that's come out of that whole ordeal. It's far from perfect. Bu

I am one of those, "I have no idea how I feel" types. Sadly I'm a bit apathetic. Perhaps there's life out there, perhaps each of these incidents has a rational, "it's a secret government project" explanati

When I was all about the bling in the late 90s, I used Enlightenment. When I wanted to get stuff done, I used KDE. XFCE bored me. Flash forward to 2020, when I wanted to get stuff done AND have a nice tiling window experience, it was i3+XFC

In 1999 we still hadn't realized the wonder of reading mp3/wma files burned onto a CD. Aiwa was the first brand I remember opening that up. USB slots were next.

Bananas are a passable source of potassium only when ripe. That quickly converts to sugar in a day or two. By the time light brown spots appear, most potassium is gone. Sunflower seeds and avocados are far better sources.
