3.1/3.11 was what was bundled with almost all store bought computers at that point. Most people weren't out there grabbing up NT 3.51 licenses to do dev work. There were quite a few OS/2 devs around. The hardware support for NT was just cra

Yeah, this is me too. I haven't done much PHP in the past year, but when I did, PHP.net was ALWAYS open in a tab or two. There was NO WAY you were gonna get me to use some bloated nasty Java based editor just to have code completion. Honest

For CSS, perhaps you're right. For Javascript, it may only take an extra hour or so to monkeypatch their JS implementations for things like Array.indexOf(). Now many of the things I do involve Canvas and SVG for information display. Try a m

Not to mention that an out of the box .NET/CLR will just run fairly well. An out of the box JVM may or may choke, depending on the app you're trying to deploy. I've spent so much time trying to tune our JVMs for performance, that sometimes

I don't HATE Javascript. It is a rather limited language. Especially if you're used to the standard Java/C#/C++ way of doing OO programming. Then again, sometimes I just want to instantiate a new object without having to say: Dog dog = new

That's what has me curious. The Hubble isn't designed to point at earth and would be of little use if we tried. Why does the US Military have telescopes that are on par with Hubble? Are they looking out into space as well? Why would they do

That still mostly exists in Visual Studio. I'm writing C# right now and the good old toolbox is right there on the left. Now it has even more goodies thanks to the .NET framework. I typically do more webapps than anything else, so I have go

That's what I did when I got my 17" HP Pavillion. I had it wiped and was installing Ubuntu within 20 minutes of unpacking. Later on down the road, I thought, "Hmmm I could really use at Windows 7 Home install for Visual Studio... maybe I sh

What's ironic, is that I'm reading your response, and I'm thinking of how unreasonable it sounds. But after taking a step back and thinking about the symbiotic relationship companies SHOULD have with their employees, this reminds me an awfu

Oh the problem has NOTHING to do with "10 minutes ago". Ubuntus's latest release 11.10 (yes I know 12.04 is a couple of days away) is Python 2.4. I don't remember what Ruby it is, but it's something like ~=1.8.7. Ruby is on 1.9.3 and the ne

I can't agree more! Although I support the idea of paying someone for their hard work, even if it was something of creative artistry. (Time is still money, even if it was spent dreaming of characters in a play, or colors on a canvas) I do N

You know what would be REALLY innovative, if instead on judging the department based on the number of PHDs, they would instead look at the accomplishments of the graduates at 5, 10, 20 and 30 year marks. There is a community college in Gain

Easy there, the UofF doesn't need Rick Scott's help to completely blunder something. I left Gainesville in 2010 and that entire freaking town has one of the most ANTI-progress sentiments I've ever seen. The one shining star on the horizon w

JSP, ASP, CFM, Rails ERB, DJango ALL have the same exact thing. The only difference is PHP tutorials typically have a big block at the top of the "page" for business logic, and then intersperse logic throughout the view. Most of these other

Yes I can imagine the decision conversation going something like this: Number 1: Sir, we just received word, Apple put their product in the box FACE UP! CEO: CRAP! Back to the drawing board. Note all staff, "product face up" has been done.

I've been trying to find some rationality in all this. I think it's crystal clear. The REASON Marco has been using version 1.x since 2006 is because there IS no version 2.0. It's NOT any of our faults that the upgrade wasn't there 6 months

Yep. You hit CTRL+SPACE and it'll give you a drop down list of possible completions. It'll also have your previously typed variables in the list. I'm more of a tab user myself though. So I'll type array_p and hit tab once for array_push. (f
