Are they going to force an upgrade to the Skype client, in order to enforce a change to the protocol? That would not be a great move. A lot of us are using older clients, due to how much we loathe the newer versions.

It is hard to deny the connections between Y Combinator/PG and the startup scene. I guess we all have our reasons for coming here. Regarding the old name of the site, you did spur me to look up the dates involved (definitely before I got he

I come to HN for hacker news (at least, as I understand the term). I wish I could hide all of the stories about startups, for example, but instead I just ignore them. People can do the same when it comes to bitcoin articles. Also, these art

Forcing bitcoins into the black market may have the opposite effect on their value. Since no national border can stop a digital currency, it wouldn't be a problem to convert a bitcoin into a "legal" currency as needed.

How is the government going to shut it down? If a government makes it illegal to use bitcoins, this is hardly going to stop their use. This is an article about drugs here, right? Has prohibition stopped the illegal trade of drugs?

You should've known what you were getting into when you originally subscribed. The game has always been closed-source, and pay-to-play (even if you use PLEX, someone is paying).

I expect that you'll end up getting downvoted by the "carbs are evil" crowd, but I think you're largely correct. Too many people are looking for the magic bullet that will let them remain sedentary, overeat, and yet still lose weight.

I'd say they are interested, if they're paying to bring someone in to talk about it. There are all kinds of reasons that they might be interested, and I'm curious to know which ones apply here :)

I don't know anything about their recruiters, but in my own experience with other companies, the recruiters know eff-all about what is really required for the job.

I'd say that they don't even have to be good to turn their nose up at the idea of working for free. If you're doing work with real value, do you really want to do it for free, unless it is for charity?

I'd say A, though I wouldn't be surprised if Facebook were working on something similar as we speak. B meanwhile, just bothers me (I wouldn't want to work under such circumstances), but perhaps there is a market for such a thing. If I'm not

I'm hoping that a silver lining in the recent Tory victory is that the door could be opened to greater competition. The big telecom companies in Canada have had their way for too long, and the quality of our internet service has suffered mi

Is FizzBuzz getting used so often in interviews that we're supposed to expect that people will have seen it before, thus the need to put a twist on it? This may say quite a bit about the unoriginality of interviews, if that is the case.

Given that we haven't seen anything new from OBL in so many years, it also means that we don't know how he aged, or the state of his health at the time of death (remember the rumours about kidney failure, for example?). Seeing his body may

I expect that some sort of proof of OBL's death will need to be provided. This is where showing the body comes into play. I don't know if they can get away with not showing it.

Any idea how much investment is taking place in MacRuby? If they're really interested in grooming a successor, I'd figure that there would be some serious work going on, behind the scenes. With the success of the platforms on which Obj-C is

Faster start-ups are fine, and all, but I'm much more interested in what happens after the start-up. For example, I'd be more interested in knowing what is causing Firefox to consume 500-600 MB of memory, once a few hours have passed.

My original comment was about Amazon.ca, not Amazon.com. If you try to buy the Kindle via Amazon.ca, you get sent to a .com site. The Canadian site itself won't sell it, as it still must be imported. For whatever reason, they don't want to

This is a point that I made in my own post. Amazon has been quite restricted in what they can and cannot do in Canada.

I wouldn't call it a "service", per se, but you cannot buy a Kindle from Amazon.ca. You can, however (and this is more on-topic), buy books for it, but the selection is limited. Edit: I should add that a lot of the things that are available

I hear you, but there are things that will never appear on HN that might be up your alley. I'm all for avoiding TechCrunch, but there are decent sites out there that are not pumping out constant garbage just to get page views.

There's money to be made in this, so someone will build it eventually. And if it works, what does this tell us about the hiring process? We can argue that fake references are unethical, of course, but I think that this lets us know that the
