I recall a story about how when MAPS was going through the initial process of starting trials, they were permitted to introduce evidence of the safety from times when it was illegal, which also provided a bit of long term results. More rece

Many of those stories remind me of the mechanism that's been described for the MDMA treatment for PTSD. Really interesting stuff.

As a software engineer, unfortunately, the sound sources that drive me to the edge of insanity are things like loud typing, or hands fishing around for chips in a bag. While I feel totally comfortable asking people to quiet down a conversat

Since at least 1997 IBM has been the top recipient of patents every year, and has had the most patents for 24 consecutive years. They are into basic research from everything from chip design to brain research and quantum computing.

I second this. I've been running Fedora on my MacBook Air, and all my desktops for around a year with no problems, except the occasional wifi issue.

There is also a really cool paper on concurrency control for databases implemented as log-structured storage: http://www.vldb.org/pvldb/vol4/p944-bernstein.pdf

We were looking for ways to implement a key-value store on a distributed log, and we actually started from a very basic persistent red-black tree, adapting it along the way for log-structured storage. The technique worked really well: http

They have a top research facility in San Jose (Almaden), among many others in the US and around the world. I'm not familiar with where the bulk of their workforce is located, or if it is highly distributed.

This is certainly the case, but not necessarily AI. Huge supercomputers are used to run physics simulations to assist with material design processes at national labs [0]. I cannot imagine that some of that work is related to dealing with ma

I suspect that Amazon will not only be dropping prices, but will be adding new ways to store data with variable pricing (e.g. new tiers as well as reduced redundancy). Not to mention that if you have 100PB in AWS you might get preferential

I really like the way this article introduces the concepts of integrating Lua into a storage system like Redis. Shameless plug: the integration of Lua into Redis served as inspiration for our recent integration of Lua into Ceph/RADOS [

We have built an implementation of CORFU [1] (the protocol Tango is based on) that runs on Ceph/RADOS, called ZLog [0]. We have a very simple prototype of Tango running ZLog. ZLog could run on other storage systems like Kafka but we ha

In the article, after the pypy plugin.py step that produced the C library, one could presumably dlopen the library to accomplish a dynamic plugin feature. Is there a way to invoke pypy to JIT this code to avoid invoking pypy and a compiler?
