This is certainly the case, but not necessarily AI. Huge supercomputers are used to run physics simulations to assist with material design processes at national labs [0]. I cannot imagine that some of that work is related to dealing with material at the extremes where fusion would be pushing the state of the art. Genetic algorithms have been used for exploring large design spaces, as well [1]. It's all really cool stuff.
